Friendly Game Play

If I'm shooting with friends I play all the time I tend to get lackadaisical and just don't play as well as I should. However if I play someone I've never played or play rarely but consider a friend I tend to play stronger, I don't have any idea why? Anyone else in this boat. Not talking about playing for money or tournaments, just friendly play.
 
I would say that's pretty standard for pool players.

Friends - They already know how you play and respect your game. You're probably not missing shots you should make, but just trying new or different shots than if you were playing in a tourney or for the cheese.

Strangers or acquaintances - It's like dogs marking their territory. It's an ego thing that you want to show them you are the dominant player.

I think it has to do with paying closer attention to detail altogether and doing what you know you can execute, not taking the extra chance.

I actually think there is a lot of power in this. We used to play quarters on the table for next up and there were
Kings of the Hill.

Its a great concept for having fun and playing as hard as you can. I think every room should have at least one table that you can go challenge up with the understanding that winner stays, loser leaves. It would create a lot of excitement in the place.

I've been playing daily with the same guys for about 5 months, and all things being equal
the quality of play does seem to go down. There just isn't the same level of desire to win.
Guess after a while maybe boredom sets in, and the games are just for fun.

I agree with him. We all should really only have on gear though. We should practice or play for perfection. I do the same thing as you. We sometimes get sloppy or are just trying shots that we would never normally take. Also i tend to rarely ever play safeties when im playing with my pool buddies unless we are gambling. Its more of a social thing than it is a grind.

Then why should you?
If you and your buddies are hanging out banging a few balls around and you get all narcissistic on them and clean their clocks, they're probably going to quit you. And, why wouldn't they?
Fun is one thing, and a fight to the death is another. :smile:
