A knowledgeable Balabushka collector who knew George recently told me that without the connection to Joe Balsis, Phil Spector would not have received an "expedited" cue. It's highly probable that Spector paid for the cue anyway. Back then, I think connections were much more valuable to obtain highly desirable and limited supply products. Spector was also known to stake good players. Perhaps he sponsored Joe or put him up when he came to Los Angeles or New York.
Phil was an action hound as well as a pretty strange cat. He did back and travel players, like Richie Florence. I believe his haunt was the old Hollywood Billiards, although it might have been called something else at the time (Ye Olde Billiard Den?).
