Fun Road Trip to Canada

On the weekend of June 23 & 24th, teams from all over the Province of British Columbia and from Washington & Oregon State battled it out in our first annual "West Coast Women's Team Scotch Doubles 8 Ball Tournament". Our hosts for the weekend were Al & Fran, owners of Bankshots Billiards Pub on Fraser Highway in Surrey, B.C. A great big thank you goes out to Al & Fran and their staff!

Finishing in 3rd Place were the PG Katz (Captain Angela Yorke, Angie Banks, Brenda Hawke, Char Taylor, Kim Stafford, and Tammi Hawn) traveling all the way from Prince George (a 9-hour drive). This fiesty team also wins the award for having the most fun on a roadtrip! The Katz had some big wins on the weekend, knocking to the "B" side the powerful team of "Killer B's" from Vancouver Island!

Finishing in 2nd place was All Felt Up, composed of Captain Brenda Willis, Regene Wentzell, Jolene Mignon, Cindy Carr, Jennifer Wishinski, and Mary-Ellen Homenchuk, based out of Surrey, BC. AFU had some tight matches all weekend long but went to the final undefeated. That's when they ran into "Sisters from Different Misters" based out of the Seattle area of Washington State.

Captained by Linda Carter and consisting of Jackie Fitchner, Kim Gates Hole, Kim Jones, Cindy Sliva and Andrea Saenz Maes, this was a topnotch team of very accomplished players. These ladies compete regularly in the "NWPA" Ladies 9 Ball Tour which has regular tournaments in Washington, Oregon and Idaho. The winners of these tournaments get a chance to compete with the Professional Ladies of the WPBA. Sisters From Different Misters lost hill-hill their very first match to Killer B's (Maryann McConnell, Tara Harrington, Andrea Wilson, Kriss, and twins Michelle and Janice), but then tore through the B side ultimately getting revenge on the Killer B's. SFDM had to defeat AFU twice to take home the First Place Trophy.

We would like to thank all the teams for participating in this inaugural tournament, especially those that travelled a long way to play! We look forward to seeing you all again next year!

Congrats Linda!!!.. some tough competition there... nice to see the Seattle-area team finish on top of All Felt Up... I would imagine the men on the rail rather enjoyed that exhibition. :p
 
Well done; the AZB community seems to be nicely represented in the northwest. It appeared in the pictures that the tables were full size; were those the ones you played on; or was this a bar table tournament????

I think everyone should take a road trip to Canada.

Thanks Don. That is true. Jennifer Wishinski has won BCA Open, Jackie Fitchner was in the Masters Finals this year, and Kim A. Hole (she loves that name) won the Masters a couple years ago. In addition, Kim A. Hole, Kim Jones and myself have all played on the WPBA.

The tables we had the pictures taken around was a bar box, and we played on 9 footers.

Do you need a passport since 9/11 to get into (and back to US) Canada? I know I went to Alberta a couple weeks after 9/11 and didn't need one (but wondered for awhile if FBI/Border Patrol guys were going to let us back into the US).

So Kim is related to breakup......at least someone in that family can play pool.

The table looked so big next to you, I thought it was bigger. It reminds me of a session I once had with Danny D., who for a whole game would not allow me the use of the bridge, "if you want to play better, put the cue ball where you don't need the bridge." At the end of that session, I was wishing I were 7 feet tall.

I can see how the table would look big compared to us. 4 of us are right around 5'1". :p

As far as not using the bridge, unless you can play opposite-handed and never play an opponent, you may not need a bridge. OTH, sometimes the most correct way to play the shot, even with ball in hand, is to put it out of reach, especially if you are only 5' and some change. :p On a 9 footer, having long shots (with the ability to reach the cueball vs. a shorter shot with a bridge) or the cueball against a rail is unacceptable to me. I would rather play it the right way, with the correct position (with the bridge) like the big (or tall) boys do.

I think that accounts for a lot of my scotch doubles success, because I try and play the right patterns and my partners are not always having to take the longer shots or be against the rail with whitey. Of course, they can usually reach those shots, too, lol.
