I knew somebody that had a horse whose favorite way to sleep was laying on it's back, four feet almost straight up in the air. We both knew he was just asleep but it was hard not to wake him up just to be 100% sure!
The horse got him several calls a month from the police and a handful of visits. The police finally started just pacifying callers and they would visit whenever they were out near where the horse was at.
Another friend had a grade horse that he was much attached to. It was ancient, old of unknown age when he acquired it. His young daughter rode the slick mouthed horse western pleasure and she was in her thirties now. The horse had to be over forty years old, probably over fifty. Although grade horses tend to outlive purebreds this was ridiculous! Part of the reason the horse was still alive was his daily bucket of fresh cooked gruel the man made for the horse every day for many years along with all of the grass he wanted. The horse had regular vet attention and the vet said his health was fine. However, like some old people, the horse was skin and bone. He got regular phone calls and visits too! His pasture was by a major four lane.
People sometimes asked me if my horses were getting enough to eat, you could see their ribs! Well, not exactly. These horses were fed very well, worked hard, and groomed to perfection. With no excess hair it was indeed easy to see where the ribs were, sheathed in heavy muscle.
I'm glad people care enough to call, sometimes annoying when they won't accept that all is well. Most horses will occasionally sleep on their backs, no big deal as long as they have room to get back up.
