It is true.
There was a stock pond near the highway I lived by. I asked my wife if she had noticed the alligator. She hadn't. Next time I had my wife with me and saw the gator in the grass I pulled over and showed it to her. "Aw, that's just an old truck tire cap!" About that time the gator started crawling our way and she was ready to go! I named the gator Uniroyal for obvious reasons.
