I used to work on an older version of that AMF pinspotter back in the 90s. Used to have a finicky control box that always had relays not working correctly. It was bastardized with a Brunswick scoring system. It had a 1970s ball return where if not maintain would act like a grinder and gouge every stuck ball. The owner finally upgraded the return after having to replace 30+ balls.

Or just put it in the middle on top of the balls. Like the cool rackers do with the eight, but leave it up there.
