We used to call the payphone next to us collect and then accept the charges... and yes in some locations it DID work. When they had the pay phone's number listed on the phone.Ahh, the good ole days...

It made no business sense to keep them, their usage wasn't paying for the maintenance and upkeep. Sucks for the people who had those jobs...
I noticed them going away even back in 2000. Yeah, walking 18 miles from the mall back to Damneck VA is not fun. The stupid last bus didn't bother to come back to the mall for the movie watchers since the mall was closed. Don't try and think you idiot bus driver, just follow your damn route. Those of us who had watched the last movie just stood there and watched the bus drive right past the mall and just keep on going. We tried 3 bars and they all had the pages for taxis ripped out and out of order payphones.
So we went to look for another one and figured why not walk in the direction of base. Well, there weren't any phones in the direction of base until we got a 1/2 mile away, and at that point, what's the point? Got back to base at 0530, luckily it was a weekend and we could sleep in.
