If you go about three miles down that that road…thataway…you’ll see a red barn….uh…well, it ain’t even close to there.
No creek, a small apple grove, two catalpa trees, not another tree! No pond, nothing but cotton fields forever. Dad was orphaned young, Aunt Jurdy took him in out of the kindness of her heart, and so he could hoe and pick cotton.
He had us try picking cotton one day, just wanted us to know what it was like. That fluffy cotton has seeds in it with two barbs to each seed. The boll itself gets hard and sharp when the cotton is ripe too. I picked cotton for about thirty minutes one day when I was around eight. Never had any desire to repeat the experiment!
I have never picked cotton other than that time, never flipped burgers or washed dishes. Worked fifteen hour days at a service station back when they were full service. I made $240 making $0.35 an hour the summer I was twelve. Working the front, greasing cars, fixing flats, mounting, balancing, and installing tires. Dad hit on a formula to sell lots of tires. I mounted 24 sets one day. No air, dad thought air tire machines were too dangerous, for the tires and rims that is!
I got my driver's license the day I turned fifteen, mostly to be able to drive to work after school. I did find a bar that night, and a pool table. I played a few times when I was fourteen and snuck in a place but I played six nights a week after work from the day I turned fifteen. Making big money playing for a beer, drink, or three dollars was a damned sight easier than pumping gas and I was hooked from the jump.
