G10 Tip Install........ FAIL !!!!!

You know it sucks that you have to go to all that effort to keep a tip on a cue. You would think that NASA would have an adhesive they could give to us that would work!

Maybe like a "sub atomic particle bond" using the 11 quark string attraction.

LOL

I put this on a guy's jump cue and it has stayed on so far. I haven't used white diamond tips lately because they do pop off. I used West 205/107 to glue it on.

Kim,

That is bad a$$, what an ingenious method.

I have a white dimaond on another break/jump cue that I modified from an old McDermott and I haven't had the first problem with that tip popping off, and it's just put on with loctite gel super glue.

G -10 one piece is great!!! On jumpers

I have a one piece on my main breaking cue but it is also a jump/break cue. I have another jump/break that I made/modified from an older McDermott and I have a white diamond on it. I'll take the G10 (one piece or not) anyday over that white diamond.

The only experience I personally have with a one piece on a breaker is a purpleheart shaft I made for my bk-2
It hit way too hard, I faced it off and put a madman break tip on.
Still to hard to control so just today I cut the whole cap off the ferrule and put another madman on.
May be just on the purpleheart that it's too "much"
I will let you know for sure.
I really liked the g-10 tip on my bk-2 shaft though.
Way better than the phenolic, but you still had to stroke it pretty good ro get a good result

I put on about a dozen white diamond tips using every glue available and all of them popped off eventually. Some took 6 months but I just couldn't have that. I love the tip so we'll see if this will keep it on.

I installed a G10 tip on my team captains break cue about a week ago and so far the darn tip has popped off TWICE !!!

First time I just used loctite gel super glue like I use on all my other tips, that lasted about 4-5 breaks and it popped off.

Second time, I used a complete new tip, and used 5 minute epoxy and let it cure overnight, he used it Thursday night in league play with no problems, then today it popped off on about the 3rd break.

What do I need to do to keep this tip on without popping off ??? Any ideas or suggestions ??

Hi,

I have a cue repair business at my pool hall and over the years I have stopped doing break tips in favor of break ferrules. They like to come off.

If a customer does not want to go break ferrule I suggest a Brown Water Buffalo. If they insist and have there own tip, Ten Bucks with no guarantee.

Before you guys start reinventing the wheel, let's start at the top...

How are you prepping the tip and the ferrule face?

You mentioned Loctite, which is good, but how old is the glue?

How are you applying pressure to hold the tip while it cures?

There is a problem in the process, not the material.

Hi Ryan and thanks for chiming in.

I prepped the tip by scuffing it with 150 grit sandpaper until the back side is smooth and then I take a razor blade and cut about 3-4 grooves in the back side for some glue relief. After facing off the ferrule I did the same to the ferrule with a razor blade.

The loctite gel glue I have is BRAND NEW, just taken out my fridge and the G10 tip was actually the first tip done on a newly opened bottle of glue. Prior to that, it had been in my fridge for about 3 weeks.

As far as applying pressure, the shaft is chucked up in the lathe and I use the tailstock to apply pressure, tighten the wing nut and let it sit overnight.

Where in my process am I going wrong ???? I'm all open for suggestions.

Maybe I better give it some more time before I speak too soon, lol. My white diamond has only been on for about 3 weeks so far.

Done all of that several times.............. gave up and now do phenolic combo.

The people that used them really cracked the rack and probably put a little spin on the c ball. That is what probably tiddley winked the tips off.

Just trying the white diamond one more time with enhancements to the ferrule. Maybe this time will be the charm.

I read your post, you said " just taken out my fridge " did you let it warm to room tempature this can take several hours. If not that will effect the bond....OTB

Yes, I took it out the fridge before I went to work that morning and did the tip that night, so the glue had been out the fridge for about 14 hours before I used it. When I said "just" taken out the fridge, I was refrrring to within the past 24 hours before I used it, sorry for not clarifying that.

The ONLY reason I took a new tube out the fridge is because the first G10 tip popped off and the glue I was previously useing was about 7-8 weeks old, so I thought the glue "might" be too old so I decided to try a new tube.

First, I scuff the face of the ferrule the same way I scuff the back of the tip. Cutting grooves with the blade isn't enough when you think about the surface area of the face. That give the bond maybe 10%. I have a board with 80 grit on one side and 150 grit on the other. I turn the shaft shaft ferrule end down and spin it like I'm starting a stick fire. A couple of time back and forth is enough.

Pressure is a fickle issue. I'll tell you what I do and you can laugh if you want but I use size 84 rubber bands, 3.5"x1/2". I double them around the shaft about 6-8 below the ferrule then up and over the tip. I get better pressure than in the chuck.

I wouldn't use 5 minute epoxy because it is brittle. Generally speaking, the faster a glue dries, the more brittle it is compared to the same brand/different cure rate. Use at least 30 minute. CA glue is fine as long as it is a thicker viscosity. I'm not a fan of gel, though. It seems to squirt out without leaving enough to "bite." When applying glue, let it sit on tip and tip ferrule for a few seconds. Even phenolic tips and/or ferrules can soak a little glue into the fibers.
