Gabe beat Efren at 1H at the DCC

I am not in the business of setting up games between players. However, if Efren is the "king of one pocket", which he very well may be; Gabe is also really good at one pocket -- it's his favorite game! :-) And Gabe has held his own in playing all of the world's best players, beating most of them at one time or another (and being beaten by them, too). Everyone has days when he is not at his best game, even Gabe -- but many times goes on to win; both players may not be at their best game, but one wins and one loses. So why use that as an excuse when someone like Efren loses? For whatever reason, they lost!

I think everyone else realizes that even tho Gabe won a short
race match against Reyes this year, that by no means establishes
him as the better player - tournaments are only tournaments.

No one, not even me, said that Gabe was the better player over Efren "over all". The issue is whether his win was "tainted," and I took exception with that, because if his analysis was going to be put on Gabe and Efren, then he should apply it to all of the games and players at the DCC. Actually, I don't think it should be applied to any game or player, because it is a subjective opinion not shared by everyone. In these tournaments, the "better players" are determined at the time as to who wins the particular tournament. Obviously when Gabe beat Larry Nevel and Bustamante when he won, he was the "better player" in that tournament, because obviously he was, because he won. However, Gabe lost to Bustamante in the 9-ball, so Bustamante was the "better player" of them both, in that game. But of course, Bustamente lost to Souquet twice, so Souquet ended up the best player of them all. I just think it is disrespectful to any player, whether it is Gabe or anyone else, who wins against another player, whether it is Efren or anyone else, for someone else to post on a forum that the win was "tainted." If the poster feels it is so important to determine if a win was tainted, let the poster himself go play someone like Efren, and if he beats them, let him post that his win against them was tainted. That would be ok. Because then it would be his own judgment on himself, not on another player.

Congratulations to Gabe on the win! A win is a win, Gabe.

From yobagua: He [Efren ]is still the greatest player on this planet in my eyes and can and will regain that position.

Indeed, Efren is the greatest pool player ever!
And he hasn't lost that position at all, my friend. Never did. And I kid you not! )

Wow! Talk about showing respect to our players. I whole-heartedly agree!!!

Man, I think it's just awful when folks dog a player for a win. I applaud Gabe for doing what I did not expect anyone to do. Sure it's a short race, but the two semi-finalists last year only got one game on Efren COMBINED (and only 8 or 9 balls I think). Gabe took down the cheddar, and was the first to do so in any DCC Efren has played in. Besides, Gabe ran 60 in the 1p challenge. That just goes to show he was ON last week.

I can't stand to handily whip someone, only to have them tell me how they played like crap, like they would have won on any other occasion.

It was just as bad to hear how bad Justin Cone was out-moved when he took Grady to the hill giving up 20-10 (What a MONSTER spot that was), or to hear how Shane was tired when Hennessey beat him getting the 9 and last two in 10 ball (When I am sure Jon was just as tired).

It just gets my goat. C'mon, give these guys UNCONDITIONAL PROPS for what they have done and leave it at that.

"Gabe is red hot at the moment but any win over Efren is a little tainted right now."

There is the original comment that you have been sniveling and bickering about for pages because it included the word "tainted". With a little closer look you might realize that the word was part of a phrase, "a little tainted right now." Stretching your comprehension to it's limit you might consider the entire sentence which includes, "Gabe is red hot at the moment."

Now putting "tainted" in the full context of the sentence it was used in we have, "Gabe is red hot at the moment but any win over Efren is a little tainted right now."

I gave credit to Gabe there and in other places pointing out that any win at the DCC is huge but you continue to snivel on for two pages about one word. Hopefully this English lesson enables you to see more than the word "tainted." I won't struggle to get you past this one sentence since your recent post makes it plain that you either didn't comprehend or have already forgotten my post where I stated that I did indeed consider my wins over people tainted if they didn't give a near peak performance.

I have beaten some of the very best, in pool and other activities. There is no comparison between the feeling of beating them at their best and beating them because they had a bad day.

Well, even if I disagree with you on several points, I apologize if I misunderstood anything you posted. Like I said, I think Efren is the greatest, too, and I hope that he does get better and come back full force. [I guess my posts get a little "tainted" sometimes. :-) ]

Anyway, Gabe is headed for the Music City Open, which he won last year and one time before that. I'm hoping he does well again.

You have a great day!

Gabe

I like Gabe. I am always hoping he does great. Also I am not a blind Efren fan that thinks he is a god or even perfect pool player or human. However, he commands my respect for the person and the player, as Gabe does. There is at least a chance that Alex and Gabe could have beaten Efren had he been on his game this year, particularly Gabe. Unfortunately, unless Efren comes back at near full strength and Gabe remains at or above the level he is now we may never get a chance to find out.

Gabe's run of sixty out of a possible seventy-five in the one-pocket challenge was fantastic. It is doubtful that Efren at his best would have surpassed it under the same conditions and in the same number of attempts.

What I am really interested in are the match-ups between some of our young guns like Gabe and the young guns from the Philippines and elsewhere. I don't know what's up with Manalo but he looked like a monster a few years ago.

I hope you have a great day tomorrow too!

People keep talking about this 60 that Gabe ran in 1H...would someone enlighten me on the rules for this? I know that it was done in the AZ room, open break, as many balls as you can into your hole...was this with BIH? How did Gabe deal with balls on the opposite rails? It boggles my mind that he banked them all in, which of course can be done but doing 30 shots like this or so is just superhuman. Or do you only need to run 8 before you go into the next rack?

Where do you get off implying that I was NOT respectful
to anyone?

If you have such a bleeding problem with the word 'tainted',
just hop on your best word processing software and do a
replace-all with the phrase 'less than totally idicative of peak
skill at the specific disipline of One Pocket' - like everyone else
did mentally - then go unwad your panties.

There were a few differences but pretty much one pocket rules and like playing the ghost always is, you miss and you are done. No ball in hand after the break but if you scratch on the break you get ball in hand behind the line and you owe one ball. I believe this is a good deal that some people may take advantage of. I think for the ghost a scratch on the break should be a three ball penalty. There is no accommodation for balls falling awkwardly after the break, you run with what is on the table until you miss. Five games in a row determines your score so Gabe averaged a 12 ball run per game!

Efren is battling arthritis and other health issues. it comes with age but i feel he can still hold ground or even better with the younger talented players like Gabe Owen

Gabe was no doubt in so freaking zone to do what he did by both beating Efren in the DCC and getting to 60 in the 1P ghost challenge.
Justin gave the nuts to an x-1pocket champ. He is pretty strong, but damn.
Hennessey beating Shane with almost a nut lock on a lot of people. Shane was up for almost two days. We all saw the rematch with the same spot when Shane was rested. Props to Jon for taking him on, and for playing him again and to Justin for either being stoned drunk or just out of his mind but he took on a very seasoned played giving one hell of a spot. From what I saw of 1hole this year knowledge goes one hell of a long way. Look at Shane, he is a better pool player than Cliff and got a 3 and 4 ball spot.
I would say that from everything I have seen read and heard Efren is the best 1 hole player out there, Gabe has come on strong and is 1/2 Efren’s age. Cliff was one of the best American players but seem to have developed some weird pause in his stroke. After watching endless hours of play. I would have to say that Nevel has a monster game as well he seems to always be in the money.
In the last what, two years SVB has put the place on notice that he has become the one to beat in pool. Looking at his recent interest in 1-hole and all the freaking action he put in at it. He is a quick learner and might be the one to look out for if not next year than the one after.

I basically was addressing Hu (ShootingArt)'s comment, and I've already told him that, even if I disagree with him on several points, I apologize if I misunderstood anything he posted. Like I told him, I think Efren is the greatest, too, and I hope that he does get better and come back full force -- I guess my posts get a little "tainted" sometimes.

End of story for me and TulsaRose

End of story for me and TulsaRose. I got tired of him focusing on one word and was somewhat rude to him in a post. :D :D :D He acknowledged that he might have been somewhat too focused on that one word and I acknowledged that I was rude. We moved on. Everyone can do what they want to of course but I suggest that we all move on.

Thanks,
Hu

PS: For those that think I am normally a bit grumpy. I go in for surgery in a few minutes. No pool for eight weeks. "Grumpy" may rise to an all new level!

Silly me - when someone replies to a post made by me,
and even quotes the content of said post,
I tend to leap to the conclusion they are addressing me
and my post

The US Open 9 Ball Championships is the premire 9 Ball event in the US. The DCC One Pocket event is the premire 1hole event. Has anyone other than Efern and Gabe won both?:)
