Galveston $1,000,000.00 tournament

purse speculation

I'm going to indulge in a little speculation here, based on what I have seen and heard.

The folks started off advertising a fairly modest purse for Galveston. Nice but not huge, well within the believable range. Then as entries and other commitments came in they have raised the purse several times. They have also been very busy with negotiations for other streams of income, at least some of which have been reported to be successful. Judging by the increase in purse it seems quite possible that some of these additional monies are being added to the purse.

I don't know these things but I find the million dollar purse that has developed over time more credible than if they had offered a million dollar purse on day one. My largest concern at this point is that they may be speaking based on commitments of others that don't follow through on their commitments. However the Galveston people do seem to have fairly deep pockets.

My predictions are for a quality event and the players getting paid. I also think the promoters will learn from this event and of course all players will have more confidence in the promoters after their first event. Pool players have had their toes singed enough times that we can't help being a wee bit cautious when a new group shows up offering a huge event.

I just recently heard that they were going to charge the amateur players wives to get in to watch. I checked the web-site and it's true. My wife has followed me to events across the nation for the past 44 years and till this has never been asked to pay, the players were always given a pass for their wives. The PRO's wives are allowed in at no cost! So it's very clear to me what is happening. Amateurs will out number the PRO's at the very least 5 to 1.

Also was I told after being eliminated you would have to pay to watch.

I booked my reservation after it was announced, but I think I will pass on this year and watch for changes next year if all goes well.

Hopefully it will be a big success, but just maybe a little too expensive for me. Hell, maybe the game is getting to expensive for us old guys to enjoy anymore.

5 to 1 sounds about right, maybe even a little low cosidering no Euro players and the number of team events.

Don't see how they could enforce this and doubt they would. If you have a player pass hows the guy at the door know you're out.

Yes everything is getting expensive. Did you try booking at Moody Gardens or somewhere else? Heard there are some pretty decent deals at some of the more budget minded hotels.

I don't think I'm going to be able to get away for this but I'm still trying. I have a place to stay probably but time and a couple of commitments I don't think I can get out of have me stumped.

Spoiler.

Hey, Cosel! Is this all you can do now -- name calling and false accusations -- instead of actually participating in the discussion?

noticed Joey has ignored
several relevant posts :-)

Lou,
The man you are referring to was one of the finest commentators in all of sports. You should respect his legacy enough to at least spell his name correctly.

Lou, I gave you my best advice and that was to go to the source for answers to your questions.

You're not going to the Galveston Tournament. We understand that and we'll miss you. Now quit being a spoiler.

Have a good time at the Straight Pool Tournament at Red Shoes and please tell John I said hi!

OUCH! If those statements are true, then it'll influence a decision for me not to go much easier. I'll check around and see if that's the way it will be.

oh Tbeaux

Lou.......JoeyA doesn't work at Best Buy OR the Galveston World Classic.

To use your analogy it's more like you are considering buying online from Bestbuy.com but instead of going to their website you go to the guy on an electronics forum who wrote a report about sony's and found the prices at best buy the best. You want him to answer all your questions and doubts or else you want him to not post. Just how much information do you have at this very moment about the 14.1 tournament you do intend to go to hmm ? Cause if it's one of the DP qualifiers I'd really love to hear what the qualifications are for the people who get invites and also why EVERY DP event has DP invites who are DP stable members or personal friends of CW or just happen to have a nice set of tits.

Oh Tbeaux man you shore do got a way wit words broh!

It would stop me from going also.

Surely that can't be the case! I have never heard of a player having to pay to get in . Terrible judgement on their part . IMO

..........

This thread left me in disbelief.

If this event truly is the 'real deal', then it deserves a proper thread that contains a *clear and concise* breakdown of the events, payouts, and other related details. Clearly the people behind this event have put a lot of effort into it, so perhaps someone would be willing to start a new thread that's a little more deserving of their efforts? (without all the drama and sale pitches - no offense intended to either of the opposing parties)

Doc........Not sure, but I think Papa Red got it a little mixed up....the way I heard it is...it's not amateurs who don't get in to all of the tournament free, it's those that play in AMATEUR EVENTS only, like league team barbox, etc......If you play in a PROFESSIONAL EVENT however, ie. 10ball, One Pocket, etc., then you DO get free admission to the whole shebang....maybe Joey can confirm this.

from the phone

I talked to some one on the phone several weeks ago.I got the number from the website. I was told that amateur players and guest(wives/husband) would have to pay to watch the pros, and there would be no spectator fee for ameteur events.Players in Pro events would recieve an extra pass for spouse. As for what happens after elimination, I,m not sure.

European Players

Just received an email from Ralf Souquet who confirmed that there will be no waivers for this tournament.

The European Players will be missed for sure.

I think some of the other professional players are now doing a second line dance. :D

Well, of course it does. But for whatever reasons, neither the promoters, nor a credible spokesmodel, have come here.

can't believe it either

Thanks, Mike. If it's true about the pro event wive's passes, then I doubt that they'd require that entrants would have to pay to watch once they're eliminated.

I will send my entry fee for the amatuer event this week. I think this event will get full if they stop it at 128 players.

On a different not, a player told me this weekend he sent his money for the amatuer event a couple of weeks ago and they send it back to him. So I guess they are keep a close eye on who can enter this event. Because of this, I would suggest everyone who wants to participate in this event to not wait till the last minute and find out if they can't enter.

Just a reminder, if you are looking for a place check here
http://www.galveston.com/seascape/, they still have rooms, and are only 2-3 miles from the Moody Gardens, not a far walk, if its the only way to get back, lol.

Papa Red,
Where on the website does it say that the amateur's wives have to pay to get in to watch? Please provide a link or directions to where it says that. I'm think the promoters should be notified and I will be happy to lend a hand if you can tell me where it says that.

FTR, the way I understand it:
Amateur Players who have paid and entry fee for the amateur tournament and their non-playing spouses will be able to watch ALL OF THE AMATEUR MATCHES-FREE OF CHARGE, regardless of how long they last in the tournament.

The amateur players and their non-playing spouses will each need a VIP seating ticket which can be the Daily Pass for the Pro Events for $15 per day or the GOLD VIP seating for the entire tournament for $125 total.

I think I paid $125 to watch the U.S. OPen 9 Ball Championship a couple of years ago.

I'll confirm this information since many of you who want to go to this tournament (especially Gulfport Doc) are concerned. If this information gets confirmed, Doc won't have any excuses for not going. :D

Just don't forget to send me a PM or post in this thread where you saw that information on their website. Thanks!

They do say that the VIP seating at the Pro Event is LIMITED and suggest advanced purchsing of tickets.
