What happened to this tournament? It was a big tournament drew big names to play . If I'm not mistaken it never happened again... Anyone know what happened?

Little different question... Are they still going to have this tournament?
Almost everyone here knows what happened. You can do a search and read the threads for yourself. Here's the 1 minute version. New promoters...wouldn't listen to, or take advice on how to make the event successful. As a result fans stayed away in droves. Promoters decided/forced (depending on how you view it) to reduce advertised prize monies by MANY thousands of dollars. Promoters lost appx. $200K. Event was deemed a flop, and is not being repeated at this time.

I live and play in Houston, know all the people involved in the former event..., it should have been held in Houston. At the end of the day they would have broken even? or lost very little if they could have pulled in a good crowd, but Galveston is to far to drive for most people, so those that did come, only came once and did not make the drive again.
No crowd, no customers, no profit!

I went to the Event in Galvaston and I think the previous poster is correct it was too far to drive each day and the hotel that was on location was very nice but also expensive if I remember right. Also fliying in to Houston and then the cab ride to galvaston hurt a little too.
Those are just two reasons why people stayed away. The event its self was great and not short on star power and so those are the only reasons that fans would not go and support it. It's a real shame.

There has been some chatter about trying to pull off another event, but this time in Houston. It's only chatter at this point, but everyone knows that asking people to drive an hour to watch and then drive an hour home at 1am or later wont work.
If people can come during lunch or before they head home, the crowds would be there...., and a cab ride from Houston to Galveston, $100!
Even though there was lots of money lost, the event was great..., just got to figure a way to make a profit.., its being looked into...,

I really enjoyed playing and for that matter seeing Galveston again (first time since 1958). There were some "wrinkles" but they made the event more memorable. I would guess that the arena itself was very expensive to rent and set up and most of the loss was there.

Hey Bob,
Your right it had all the making of a great event, if they move it to Houston, and down size the arena a bit, it could really be great for pool..., lots of fans in the 4th largest city and lots of fans in the surronding cities too.
