Johnny Ts thread about women playing for the cheese, brought something to mind.
The last two weekends I went (first) to a womens tourney, then this weekend, I went to a mens tourney.
Wow, the difference was amazing!!!!!!!
Not about the difference in play with the actual tournament. The difference of the mentality and behavior with gambling, and the talk outside of the tourney!!!!
At the womens tourney, not one single mention of gambling, AT ALL!!!
At the mens tourney, thats all I heard outside in the smoking area.(and very entertaining I might add)
Its very interesting to me the differences with men and women players.
Anyone have any thoughts on this? I would love to hear them.

My room has held at least 20 womans tournaments(LST's) over the years, and the only time I have ever seen someone gamble is Ming played one of the local guys around 1993 or 1994. She is the only woman ever to get into action during one of our events, though there has been plenty of action with some of the boyfriends of the girls in the events!

Most of the women get offended when they are asked to gamble by other women. This is what I have heard as I happen to know a handful of women that love to gamble.

Hundreds, if not thousands of girls/women are out there in bars every weekend hustling guys out of small amounts of money( $2- $5 a pop) while waiting for one of them to get mad and try to high roll her. Then I can almost hear her whisper from across the room, "I got ya now sucker". I enjoy sitting and watching the show myself.

Over the years I've taught quite a few how to make some money at the clubs and have fun doing it. I hardly ever tried to show them how to shoot, that they had to have already, just the art of the hustle.

I taught my three daughter's how to do it. Only one really did it. The youngest one Kelly "wild child". I've seen her bring home a couple $100 from a night playing pool at a local club more than a few times. The clubs she went to I knew the owner, the bartender, or the bouncer, so it was like having her in adult daycare. I guess that would be night care. Johnnyt

The only gal I ever saw gambling for any sizeable $ was Sarah Rousey. She played her heart out races to 11 9 ball against anyone that wanted to play.. I watched and was totally impressed at her skill, tenacity, and flat out play to win it all attitude! This was in Durham NC a couple years ago and I am so glad I got to see her play! Sarah if you read this, you made my day!!!

Ladies in action

What I have witnessed watching amateur players in a room with a lot of gambling.

Most of the ladies never ask anyone to play

Many of the men will not risk the ego and the $ to match up against a female

The few times I have been privy to a man asking a woman to gamble the guy was not offering a fair game

Never seen or heard of,that I can recall,2 ladies matching up

I do know a couple of women who used to like to bark at guys for scotch doubles and did quite well

I can only speak to amateur level pool, bartable and A/B level on 9s

one of the best hustlers I knew . . .

More years ago than I like to recall I knew a girl that worked in a bar. She did OK when the bets were small holding her own with the men on the little seven footers they had in there. However I never saw her do anything but pluck a chicken when the money got right. The girl could flat play.

It didn't hurt that she was very attractive and the guys had a hard time trying to decide if beating her at pool was a good thing or a bad thing. Didn't really matter what they thought though, when she cranked up the heat she was one of the top few players in the place, and when the money was right she cranked it up a lot!

Interesting thread.

My first thought is most of the women need to travel back home and so they don't stick around to gamble. Men on the other hand (the road players going to tournament to tournament) have the time (and possibly need) to gamble. As for Saturday nights, at the women's tournaments I go to a Qualifier is up for grabs and MOST women focus on that until the tournament is over or focus on cashing high.

I saw at a recent tournament two females gambling and ironically, they both were traveling around to different tournaments (i.e., they weren't headed back home to a day job).

Maybe it's too coincidental, but that's my first thought.

My other thought is men simply gamble more than women in general. Oh, that's the original Q, lol!

You hit the nail on the head!
I competed in many qualifiers in the 90's and asked LOTS of girls to play. Most would be totally offended. And the sad part was I wasn't looking to gamble high (although I certainly would if I had the cash) I just wanted to play 5-10 game/10-20 sets. I could never understand it. Of course I never sought out the champs....lol....although I did battle for a long time with Monica Webb and let me tell ya, she was one of the toughest woman gamblers I ever played!

When you are around an amatuer woman's tournament, for the most part the ladies are there to socialize with each other. Of course there are exceptions to the rule. And I haven't really been around much in the last 5 years so maybe things have changed but I doubt it. I always enjoyed competing in men's events a lot more than with the women.

Just my take on it.

Men make the money in the house so they can gamble with all the money they want. Women dont make as much money so they're on limited spending which is why many tournaments allow them free entry fees.

I'm just kidding of course :).

There have been a good number of women that gamble and gamble for far bigger action than has been spoken of on this thread over the years. 2 examples would be when Helena and Jeanette lived in LA and 2 weeks before the WPBA event in Hawaii one year. I'm sure some one that knows what I am talkin about will write about it. And then there have been other gambling here and there. I have to agree, though, that men gamble more than women.I think some of the reasons are mostly that they travel more and need to do that more than the women. Most of the women players that would be inclined to gamble are on the pro tour and also have jobs or if they are higher ranked players are busy with sponsorship stuff, exhibitions, lesson, ect. It might go hand in hand w/ women in general like security. Also WPBA does not allow us to gamble on sites. I wish more girls would play for money, our games would get even better. I would be willing to play any girl on tour for an agrred amount of money. I used to say what ever your ranking is put a couple zeros behind it and that's what we can play for. This is starting to suck a little bit now that Karen and Allison are moving downward in the ranking. Oh well, I will just scratch them off the list. Karen would be a pleasure to play sometime, her game is all around top shelf.

Many years ago, when I lived in NYC, I was in Corner Billiards warming up for league when a cute blonde girl came over and said very sweetly with a southern drawl, "You wanna play some cheap sets?" it was Monica () of course and I knew who she was. I really did not gamble then, had only been playing a short time and told her politely I had league and could not, which was true but also a convenient excuse. I would have had no idea of how to get a fair spot.
I never forgot that line though and now use it all the time. Last time I was in FL for the first Spirit stop, I got knocked out early and used that line on a few women, to no avail. It is not easy to find other females to pony up... but I try, I have to admit, cause I figure I can play most unknown women even and win.
I do have a friend here I practice with and we always play cheap 20/30 $ sets and I know she plays for bigger money all the time. She has a lot of gamble and it has brought her game up very fast. A year ago I could give her a couple on the wire and the breaks, now we play even. I personally love to gamble but only like to bet what I can afford to lose... which aint much!

Here's part of a short story I wrote for Amazon.Com in 2006.

Here's a few words on women players. Years ago, you never had to worry much about
getting hustled from women pool players. Today that has changed big time. There are hundreds
and maybe thousands of women players around the country that can beat the average guy out of
a lot of his money fast. As far as people saying that the top women can't beat the top guys in
pool goes? Don't believe it. The top women pros now can run a hundred balls and more without
missing, or run racks of nine or eight ball on you. I know about twenty of them over the years that go around
the country hustling pool when there not playing in tournaments. They do very well too. I don't
want to spoil their action, so I won't name any of them here. I just want you to be aware that they
exist. So don?t let the pretty faces fool you. Most have been playing pool since they were tall
enough to reach the table and know how to pull a hustle well as any male raod player.

Their number one advantage is playing on a guy?s number one fear of losing to a woman on a
pool table in front of of a bar orpoolroom full of guys. So if this is the sort of thing that would
bother you, my advice is don?t play women, because it will happen. ***Johnnyt

Yes, the socializing part of your post is somewhat true. But its not the case with some of the players(including myself)
Some women are not there to "just" socialize. Some take this game VERY seriously.
Too bad we dont live in the same area. I would love to gamble with you.

One of those women who don't make as much money as men busted your butt pretty good.

I'm just kidding also.......NOT!!!!!!

yep and i learned more from that day than any other day. And I'll be happy to bust your ass if you're down my way.

I'll be in atlanta the next 2 weekends too so if you would like to say that in person bring your money. Lets see what you're made of.

Hi Milo

I agree with you. I know that there are women (and I'm talking about amateur status) that are competitive....most have to be to even fork out the money to compete in tournaments. What I meant to say was that even a lot of the competitive ones don't seem to take it too serious.....but that's their choice. Again, I'm referring to amateur/semi-pro status players.

I'm really not trying to be critical.....just making an observation and expressing the kind of environment that I prefer when playing in a tournament or gambling. And by the way, I LOVE to gamble at pool too so maybe we'll cross paths at some point in the future. You never know... we may have played before. PM me your name....we may know each other.
Thanks.

Did you really think you could post in this thread and no one would bring that up? Or have you already forgotten what happened last time you woofed at someone online? You obviously didn't pick up any humility from losing to Melinda...
