Gambling with friends

I don't ever gamble with friends. I don't want to win money or loose to them. Seems like a good way to end a friendship. We usually play a race to 7 or 11 for a dollar but nobody gets paid, we do it just so we might try a little harder. I have had one of my best friends bust me and we didn't talk for a couple of years. He was ashamed because he took advantage of my gambling weakness and new I would chase the money. At the time I didn't get mad but it hurt my feelings after it was over.
 
My favorite gamble with friends is lato tickets. Dollar a game, looser paye and split any winners.
 
I prefer to gamble with my friends over just about anyone, but that's because we have done it for so long without any incident. Plus it's normally friendly. Race to 3 for the next pitcher type of stuff.

If you have a weakness for gambling, then gambling with anyone is probably a bad idea but especially friends.

My buddies and I occasionally play cheap and usually make it hard to win anyway. Something like, have to win 5 games in a row for 5 bucks each. When you get 3 or 4 good players on the table to win 5 in a row is tough.

Some people can handle it and some can't. Personally, I'd rather lose a few nuggets to my friends than somebody I don't particularly care for. It's definitely a fine line, but usually you can feel a particular friend out and figure out if this is something they can handle or not. Personally, I do not mind it.
 
I've seen friends that squabble over silly five and ten dollar stuff, and others who bet a C more on football games regularly with no conflict at all. It's down to your comfort level both with the amount being bet and the friend. I'd never take money from a friend who us obviously upset at losing it.

Usually if my buddies and I want to bring out a little more effort vs each other we play a race. Just racing and marking the score brings out some competitive spirit.

We usually play cheap so no one gets hurt. I adjust accordingly to skill level and what they like to play for. Some a dollar a game is a lot. Some 10 a game is not a lot.

I have buddy that comes over and we shoot for a dollar, race to ten.
I would supply the drinks from craft beer, Crown, Captains, Ethiopian and Costa Rican coffee. And have even have grilled Delmonico's. , and don't even think of the cost of the drinks or food.
But let me lose that dollar and it kind of pisses me off. His dollars are on the left of the poster, mine on the right. He wont take them with him, Me thinks he's playing a mind game.

The last time I "gambled with friends" was many years ago.
We were playing scotch doubles, me and a filipino friend against 2 Samoan
brothers, and yes, they were big guys. Started out $5 a man per 9-ball game, but my partner and one of the brothers wanted to escalate the game;
I wanted to keep it friendly, so the other brother and I kept it at $5.
The brother who escalated kept sharking me during the remainder of the session, but he ended up losing a couple hundred dollars. He told my p that he didn't have the money and that he'll give him the money at a later date.
That did not go well with my p, because he said he saw him with a wad of money earlier. Well, long story short, I had to get between him and my p when he had him on the floor choking him after my p busted a house cue over his head. No more gambling with "friends" after that.
 
My dad played his college roommate his entire life $1 a hole golf. During my HS years he had three buddies and himself that had a standing rotating poker game once a month, it was more for bragging rights and its what friends are all about. If someone gets too serious, then you'll figure out the next move.
 
it just depends, but i personally don't gamble at pool with my close friends. most people see pool as a skill game so i don't gamble against close friends, but other activities such sports and poker games then gambling is ok, even though sports betting and poker are skill games too, but most don't see it that way. you don't want to make a habit of busting your best friends if you want to keep them, too.

buds, well that is a different story.
 
the only time i gamble with friends is if we are trying to get ready for a tournament or a gambling match that's coming up. We play races to 5 or 7 for $20.
 
I enjoy gambling with some of my friends and others I prefer to play just for fun...

One of my Army buddies loved to gamble at pool but he didn't know when to quit...He would chase his money until he was broke. I did like to gamble with him because it was fun but I had a rule that I wouldn't take more than $40 in a month from him...I would keep it at friendly sets of $5-10 and sometimes I'd stuff my winnings in the top pouch of his cue case when he wasn't looking...I don't think he ever caught on that it was me putting it there...lol ...other times I'd just cover the cost of the pool and beers and make sure we both had a good time.

None of my current pool playing friends like to gamble at pool...playing for $5 a game or a $20 set is big deal to them so I prefer to keep it at playing just to play...The pool scene where I live now is virtually nonexistent but I dont have a problem playing for fun...

Gambling with a associate, sure. Gambling with a Friend, it aint going to work out in the end, not if I bust you. $1 a game or for table time ok, maybe, but once the bet gets higher its going to be a problem.

I have often gambled with friends in ring games but never head up. It is just a bad thing to do.
 
If I'm friends with someone outside of the pool realm, I don't like to gamble with them. If we're just friends through pool, fair game. I don't gamble with my close friends, the ones I barbecue with and such.
 
I'll gamble with friends, if it is a fair game and we both know it is fair. $10, $50, $100.

But I try not to gamble with a few friends whom I know loosing $100 will put a damper on their week/month.
