Gene " the machine "

I was wonder about people I befriended in the past . And was wondering if anyone might know who this is. Called himself Gene "the machine '. I truly was amazed at this guy.. He was in his twenties then I believe so he's somewhere in his 50's now. Came into the Keys in the 80's.

Since these pool nick names are not registered trade marks ,now and then u come accross 2-3 people with the same nick name.Besides gene cooper I came accross another player who also claimed the nick name of 'gene the machine'.He used to be a cue repairman, managed the pro shop at Mothers in Charolette many years ago.he later left mothers went to a small town in the Virginia-Tennessee border.
One time I saw gene cooper gambling in one pocket with shannon daulton when shannon was 17-18 years old

As i mentioned earlier you can find 2-3 people sporting the same nick name like in 'Mountain man', 'Iceman','giant killer'

nicki bennish-Giant killer
david howard-Giant killer
Mika immonen & larry hubbard- Iceman

You're right Bill. Sure looked like Blackie in the red shirt and hat, but on closer inspection it's not him. Also the kid sitting down with the orange shirt looks so much like a young Shannon. I guess I don't know him. I can't even see that clearly using a magnifying glass. :)

P.S. That's Rosey in the brown hat sitting next to Sonny. I see Mark Showalter too and I think the grey haired guy on the end is Chuck Absher.

You should have looked at the guy in the red shirt and hat closer, Jay, because I am sure you know him too, "Good-Time" Charlie Owens. Charlie was the first ever I knew to walk around a 9' Gold Crown looking for a place to put the quarter in. Busted the whole house......

Back row, 2nd from the left is Country Calvin Harcrow. 3rd row, left of Jeff Carter is Al O'rear ..

Back row, 2nd from right, looks like Floyd Trice. Next to Floyd (his left) looks like Tom Spensor.

Now, argue about these names...

Thanks for posting the picture with the names. Should have recongized Danny Cook. Played him several times around Memphis in the 80's. When I read the name "Gene the Machine" it brought back old memories of Bill Lee's place in Pascagoula, MS in the 70's. I remember Gene Cooper playing there a couple of times. In 1980 I was hustling pool around Salt Lake City, UT and ran into him again. This is the first I've heard the name since...

Speaking of Bill Lee and Salt Lake, plane_o, Did you know, Salt Lake Louis Bethney, that used to hang around Bill Lee's place back in the 70s? There was a ton of action there in those days. Every road runner made a trip there.

another possibility

Eugene Browning also occasionally went by "Gene The Machine". He was in the Carolina`s in the early nineties. Last I heard he was in Houston Texas. Played pretty sporty. Looked like and hung around college age guys, but was a little older. Claimed to be the best player with a regular job. Some kind of mathematician.

That is the most f'kd up thing I ever heard: mathmatician. Maybe chemist:rolleyes:

He was a boxing promoter when I knew him.
