Giving Money Back To An Opponent

Winnings usually go for table time tab and drinks......it's seldom that any serious, worrisome amount of money is involved so I basically just think of this as reinvesting the $ for the sake of the game.

Never given money directly back except once when I felt like I was cheated in a game of one pocket called the player out and because I did that and others there were is only other action he just left the money and said he wouldn't play with someone who called him cheater
I said neither will I and took my half off light and left

Let people off hook loads though
Hear people day shit like that wouldn't happen in my day or he'd get his fingers broke around my area but reality is I am a working professional who's not going to get into a potential altercation that'll cost me my family and job over few hundred bucks
That's just part of gambling u fortunately

Usually pool players who want gamble are scummy and throw air barrel or something else

Hard to fund good action where games fair they play fair and have money

As far as " giving " money back there is NO SUCH THING as far as I'm concerned. Not EVER gonna do that . However, I have busted people out and " loaned themy some money back. For me this is a rare thing to do because as we all know most of the folks in the pool room have less than stellar credit and I'm not talking about their fica score lol. The only people I have loaned money back to are few select players. In our pool room we had a fairly tight group of regulars . There were probably only like 3-5 guys that I knew well, knew for a long time, and we all played each other at least once a week. Also another stipulation was they had to lose some real money. There were just a handful of guys that would consistently lose between $2000-$4000 a week, each and every week, over and over again. Now I obviously was not always the one winning all this money from these guys but as I said we all would always play at least once a week on average and when we did play they would always lose at least a grand but more often than not like $1500-$2000 a session. Once I would bust the out for whatever they had in their pockets ( see listed amounts above ) they normally would want to borrow about $500 so they could stock up " on supplies " ( we all know what supplies means right ?) For their road trip they would have to go on to get pumped back up . I had absolutely no problem giving theme the money what so ever. They always would pay me first thing when walking thru the door coming back off the road. Also as some put it, " it's just good customer service " lol. Plus these were pretty much all machine guys so they truly did have an infinite supply of money . Literally they all went thru money just like it was Monopoly money , like it wasn't even real. It was absolutely mind boggling the amounts of money these guys went thru. Anyway they were always good for the money , they would be right back in action the second they got back, plus I was already in their pockets for countless thousands of dollars so even if by some chance I didn't get paid back ( which never happened ) I would have still been up tens of thousands of dollars so who cares right? And of course probably the biggest thing is no one ever wanted to get a bad rep for stiffing someone.

i have or rather always paid the time, and frequently offered walking stick
before i basically quit , a friend of mine introduced me to a well know fella here on az

i was reluctant to play,as i never play friends
as i expected i won,i left the money with him and he gave me a nice cue

the last time i won $1000 and ,i actually felt no joy in the win,i asked him to forget it,but he would have no part in that

i enjoy playing him,but i didn't want it to come between friends It is just not in me to let him win.
i always reserved that tactic to adjust and raise the bet

also i once beat a stranger for a sizeable bet, actually huge and he was reduced to tears
this was a big tough guy,and he was sincere

i tore up thousands of dollars worth of checks, company checks,as he let slip that it would cost him his business

i had already made a ton,2 motorcycles and thousands when i was 19 and that was a lot of money

today many fear playing on checks or credit, but my experience is that you seldom win$10,000 let alone a nice score
playing for cash.few people carry that kind of money

i have been in on a bunch of big wins, but i tried to only play professional gamblers, wealthy stake horses,
pimps and drug dealers,i won't like to take money from working men or their wives and kids

perhaps i am a soft touch, but it seems so low down dirty and mean
who can say,it worked for me.

rather have always been a soft touch, although not everyone would
believe that
today i have basically left the life altogether and have no regrets about quiting
Dean grew up under the old "scufflers" code. It was actually common to give the busted player bus fare to get home.

I know this is gibberish to you young guns!

Yea I'm familiar with this practice. If they lost at least a little decent money to you and you busted them out it was common to give them a few bucks back. Not really bus fair in our room but few bucks for some food, pack of smokes, and a few bucks for gas if it was needed. Didn't they used to call this " walkin money " or something like that?

When I referred to serious, worrisome money in my post......it was regarding my wallet......my pool matches......not what others are inclined to wager.
I stick strictly to $5, 10, 20.,50, & 100 and IMO, the aforementioned amounts aren't serious money or else I wouldn't even bet. I play pool for enjoyment

Thanks for the cool stories guys. I've been on both sides of the coin, so it's neat to hear your differing perspectives.

I never play for large coin, but if someone lost a small bet to me, It would not be essential that I collect, but I would hope they at least offered!. I would be just as likely to ask for a beer instead of payment.

I on the other hand, pay off on every bet, I dont want to be "that guy".....
(unless they "refuse" to take my money)

what do you all think of this scenario? Have you ever given back some or all of your winnings to an opponent, and if so, why? Were you so much better than them that it was practically stealing, or did you admire their play? For those of your who have been offered you money back after losing a pool match, what were the circumstances?

Interested to hear your stories.
keep alll the money pay his table then look for the next too hustle!!!

Never had someone return money or tell me that we were square.

I have let somebody off the hook who was completely **** faced after he'd just beaten me out of a $500 One Pocket set the night before. He had played well and I played poorly when I was the favorite. Anyways, we were playing cheap 9 ball and he had been throwing money around left and right, but I told him I didn't want to take his money like that. He was so drunk he missed 3-4 ft shots that were straight in.

How much did he lose to you?

I have given it back once. We had just got finished playing and his wife comes in and finds out he lost almost all of his check, and she was in pretty bad shape after hearing he was almost broke. Turns out he was gambling with money needed to feed the kids and pay rent. I knew this guy, and I knew he was an idiot, but didn't think he was that stupid. After a bit (we had quit playing) and he went to the crapper, I slid over to her and gave her the money, and told her not to tell her old man. I can guarantee you she didn't tell him cause if she had, he would have been at the hall the next day gambling it away. Never played the guy again as I wanted his kids to eat. Of course someone else may have taken his money, but it wasn't going to be me.

I used to play one hole with a guy pretty regular that thought he was 2 balls better than he actually was, with an ego that wouldn't fit in the hall. Now this guy, I loved playing him, and never gave him a dime back. He and his ego had the natural ability of letting his alligator mouth, overload his hummingbird ass. He was a complete moron and pretty much a jerk. I played him for quite a while before he finally stopped coming in the hall. The bad thing about playing him, was you had to listen to a lot of chirping, *****ing and crying, but the steady income was nice.

I am not an action player. I prefer to just jump in the pit and learn as much as I can with all the other students of the game at my hall. However, my hall does have action from time to time. I have see it all... people getting up in their opponents face over $2.00 (seriously). But mostly it is very mature, very amicable and always a joy to watch people play for the cash. I do a fair bit of rail betting and even stake a couple players when the nutts are had.

I have seen people busted wide open by people that I consider to be complete social retards, but then the retards even know to not leave someone with absolutely nothing. You can tell when you have allowed your opponent to be foolish with a game they could not afford to lose. It's obvious. People usually catch it and give them a little limp-away cheddar.

Regards,

Lesh
