I could never find a pair of glasses to use for pool that were good for close up as well as distance until now.
I tried varifocal, bi focal and plain reading glasses.
I usually ended playing with plain reading glasses and saw 1 1/2 balls when looking at a ball more than 4 diamonds away. I guess I got used to aiming at the middle of the blur.
At least the top edge of the framed we not in my line of sight when looking at the object ball.
The other day I was waiting in a CVS pharmacy waiting for a flue shot and playing around with the reading glasses on display.
I put on a pair of + 1.25 reading glasses which is half of my normal reading strength and found I could see clearly from about 2 feet to 12 feet.
They were in an avaitor shape so they also were big enough to not see the top of the frame while bending over to shoot.
Played league last nite and they were great. Could see perfectly to play. Still however needed to change to the reading glasses to keep score.
Best $7.99 I ever spent.

Hope this helps some one ...

I recently went to my ophthalmologist's appointment. After three years, I thought it was time since I noticed a reduction in my ability to see perfectly. The short story: Yes, my eyes are getting a little worse but I can pass a Motor Vehicle driving test without glasses.

I told my doctor about my passion for pool and he suggested 1.25 or 1.50 reading glasses and if I thought I really needed them to play pool better, he would make me some pool glasses or script me some contact lenses. I bought both powers and tried them at the pool hall and determined that I could see better without the glasses, except the cue ball sure looked remarkable.

Hi

I went to an eye Dr in Reading PA (Stuart S. Cohn, 500 Jefferson Street Hyde Park, Reading, PA 610-921-9200) and asked to check my vision to a distance I felt the optimum distance for most shoots. I measured with a tape measure from my eyes to 6 feet, remember, 1.5 feet is from your eyes to the cue ball, then 4.5 feet to the object ball. He measured with a tape measure (brought my own in case he didn't have one) and he held the eye chart at 6 feet, and determined my prescription from there. I then found an oversize eye glass frame so the frame was above my eyebrow so when I leaned over for a shot I was not seeing the frame. He had the lenses made with the sweet spot (focal point of the lense, I think) at the top of the lense instead of straight ahead, there is a difference. The result is the entire table came into focus, I could not read close up with them or see clearly far away. In order to get this done, I went to 3 different eye Drs. They argued with me that this was not how your eyes work but I was insistant and walked out when they woud not test me like this. I finally found Dr Cohn through a pool player friend and have been very satisfied with the improvement to my game. It's simple, if you can't see you can't aim.

Geez Joey. I didn't think this story was going where it ended up. I was ready to head to CVS if the glasses had received your endorsement.

I got fitted for contacts. I can see the pool balls crystal clear and can read without reading glasses. Took no time to get use to wearing contacts.

What size table do you typically play on?

Hard to pass up a coke bottle lens cheap when your a pool player that's broke and can't see. But yeah, if I saw, and (I will now start looking) a frame style of Howard Vickery, I'll definitely give it a shot. Ya can always take em back.

I looked at those billiard glasses and man are those things butt-ugly, they're fugly. So I look on line at a place called Zenni Optical and ordered the glasses you see below, also butt-ugly, but only one cheek perhaps. Anyways, they give me a clear field of vision, they don't get in the way, and most of the girls like them in a nerdish kind of way. I think I paid $25 for them or something like that. Pretty good investment.

I think the doctor knew what was going to happen because as I was walking out the door, he said, "See you next year!".

His name is Dr. Ronald Landry and he is in Metairie, LA. I told him that I have always had 20/15 vision and wanted to get it back with Lasik surgery, since it has dropped slightly. He countered that my vision wasn't bad at all and that he didn't need the money and added that the good news is that I didn't have cataracts and the bad news was I didn't have cataracts. If they remove the cataracts, they can insert a lens to do exactly what I want done. I like a doctor who doesn't need the money. :D

I seem to make this same post every time glasses come up. I bought some frames at a thrift store to experiment with and came up with this. I have been using them for more then a year now and what a difference. My objective was to have the frames no obstruct my vision but even more so. I wanted the lenses to be squarely in front of my eyes when I am down on the ball. With my old glasses I could just not play. I also got a small amount of distortion due to looking through the lenses at a slight angle. With what I made I solved those problems. My glasses are also titanium and the lenses are a very lite I believe called polycarbonate. They are so lite you forget you have them on.

MACGUY,
yours look just like the ones I found at cvs except for having the bent arms.
I like the idea of a centered lens.
I am going to try and see if I can bend mine.

Pool Goggles

Has anyone ever come up with a pair that is one solid side to side lens, like a dive mask? I might try that, especially if it removed the glare from the table lights. Also, it would rid you of seeing your rim , right?

A solid side to side lens like goggles...I can't help but envision Earl strolling up to the table wearing a welders helmet with prescription lens and arm weights while ranting about his opponent using a jump cue!

Back on topic----it's time for an eye exam so I'll see what the eye doc has to say this year.

I DID'NT HAVE A DISTANCE ISSUE. I TOLD THE DR. I PLAYED POOL AND HE TUNED ME IN. THE Rx IS HALF OF WHAT MY READING GLASSES ARE. I SEE GREAT ALL AROUND WITHOUT THE HASSLE OF PUTTING GLASSES ON AND OFF. THE OTHER PLUS IS YOUR EYES DON'T HAVE TO KEEP ADJUSTING TO GLASSES ON FOR THIS AND GLASSES OFF FOR THAT. IT TAKES A TOLL AFTER AWHILE ON YOUR EYES. I CAN GO FROM KEEPING SCORE TO PLAYING WITH NO STRAIN ON MY EYES. IT WORKS FOR ME

I use my prescription glasses I got from here: www.billiard-eyeglasses.com when I play league/tournaments, but when I'm practicing at home, I too use the Wal-Mart/Walgreen's/CVS 1.25 reading glasses. They seem to work just fine for me on my 8-foot table.

I've had to start wearing glasses but I can't wear them when I play because I see over the top of the frames. I will check into this.
Thanks for the information
