Glue for Leather Wraps

Would you spray the handle with sanding sealer before applying the adhesive? I have had this done to all my cues on a rewrap, leather or linen, and I was curious if you guys did the same.

i use contact cement but ive also used rubber cement. rubber cement is easier to clean up. alot less messy. it doesnt stick to anything thats not bare wood tho. (epoxy or CA) if you have to build up you have to use contact cement.

What kind specifically?

I assume all contact cements are not created equal? Can those who do leather wraps list the brand of contact cement they prefer....and why?

Bill,

I have used several different brands and not really noticed much of a difference.

I think the biggest thing is how you apply it. You must smooth it out so there aren't any lumps or build ups of glue, and you need to let it dry on both sides before you put it together.

Durabond or Topz contact cement in the can with brush (from Tiger Products). Get the thinner too as the cement thickens, especially when open. Has right amount workability and tack. You'll thank me later!

I have contact cement; however talking with Mario at M Cues he suggested something a bit less 'permanent setting' for my first leather wrap, such as Elmer's.

Therefore, I ended up using Elmer's white glue and it certainly stuck leather to bare wood!

I think I will go to contact cement for my next leather wrap however, as the adjust ability is as much of a curse as a help when doing the leather wrap, as is can be 'wiggled around' on the wet Elmer's... You can see how that can be a problem.

With any adhesive, you definitely have to have a thin, even coating of adhesive or it will get lumpy. Mine is a bit lumpier than I would have liked, but not so bad as to tear it off and start over. I will re-do the Titlist at some point, but for now I just enjoy playing with it!:)

I used 3M spray adhesive #90. The same stuff I have used for years putting headliners in old Mustangs. I have done three leather wraps that way with no problems. It holds fast and firm but can be repositioned if needed. Is anyone else using spray.

I used the 3M 'super trim adhesive' for amplifier tolex recoverings (stronger than 90 but same stuff basically as I have used both over the years), but had not thought about that for a wrap.

With an amp, you leave excess so repositioning is generally not needed...
