God Bless our Troops In Tonights Assault in Majah, Afghanistan

I have only respect for our Troops and wish them a speedy victory.

But for the Commander in Chief to notify the Taliban that we were coming, and providing them a full weeks' notice, is unconscionable.

Last week, we dropped tens of thousands of flyers that said "we're coming - if you're a civilian, stay in your home and we won't mess with you" (paraphrase).

Brilliant. Why don't just go and arrest all the Taliban, then Mirandize them en masse and make them say they're sorry. I think it's still legal to tickle them into submission....

Couldn't agree more! A greenie for you.

afghan assault

It truely is a shame all this bloodshed for a country like ours that doesn't care about soldiers only uses them. I wish they would pull the rest of the military out of a country that needs to handle themselves by themselves and not by us!

U.S., Afghan and NATO Forces Begin Offensive Against Taliban
Friday, February 12, 2010
By Justin Fishel

Feb. 11: U.S. soldiers work on a Stryker armored vehicle after it slid on a narrow road west of Lashkar Gah, in Helmand province.

Roughly 15,000 American, Afghan and NATO forces began an assault late Friday on the Taliban in the central Helmand town of Marjah in what senior military commanders are calling the largest operation since the start of the Afghanistan war.

Officials in the area have been signaling the offensive for weeks with hopes that innocent civilians and dispassionate Taliban fighters would flee the area. Commanders are stressing the importance of protecting the population rather than simply killing the resistance. Yet there have been reports civilians are having trouble getting out.

"They (Taliban) don't allow families to leave. Families can only leave the village when they are not seen while leaving," Qari Mohammad Nabi, a Marjah resident, said Friday shortly before the invasion.

The objective of Operation Moshtarak, which means "together" in Dari, is to secure the region from narcoterrorism and establish basic services under supervision of the Afghan government, a senior defense official told Fox News. To do that, Afghan and NATO forces need to defeat the remaining insurgents and drastically reduce the number of heroin-producing crops that fund the Taliban. U.S. commanders are confident they'll win the fight, but removing the poppy crops will prove harder than the battle.....

Im sure 80% of the Heroin winds up on the streets of the US so WE are basically funding these rats.

I wish the best for our troops, and hope they're not politically hamstrung from achieving success and victory.

You have to understand when we first fought in Afghanistan we provided for the civilians there. The strategy was to defend the people. Bush played it well early. Then with Iraq, Afghanistan took a back burner. The civilians couldn't be provided for and the situation deteriorated. The civilians trust had been betrayed by the Bush administration. The forces that occupied the area were forced to fight much as the Russians did and that's how the Taliban made their gains back into the area.

We are trying to regain the peoples trust and show them that we will not only defend them, provide for them, but with their help bring peace to the region for the first time in 30 years. But it can't be done without their help. Killing them in the imminent battle has the opposite effect of gaining trust. So much like the Battle of Fullujah a long prior warning let a large part of the civilian population melt away in the night for months before the major battle happened. We kicked their asses bad in Fallujah. Then when the polls opened for the first time in Iraq, Fallujah had the highest voter turnout.

We don't fear the enemy in a conventional war. If the civilian is gone that's what it becomes conventional.

Not all heroin is bad...morphine is derived from it and is used in hospitals and battlefields alike right?

It's a shame that our boys have to sacrifice so much. What is wrong with us humans that we can't live together and work for the common good? Anyway, God bless our troops and protect them from the enemy.

This weekend is the anniversary of the firebombing of Dresden,Germany in which an estimated 500,000 German Civilians were killed. It was okay back then because we were killing evil Nazi Germans who supported Adolph Hitler. Today,we dare not accidentally kill any civilians, many who support the Taliban, and probably helped plant the IED's waiting for our troops. Nothing like giving the enemy the heads up on our arrival!! Did the 9/11 hijackers send the people in the WTC's a flyer saying what they were planning on doing? What a crazy freaking thing to do with our troops!!!
My message for the Afghan Civilians: Weapons are available on every street corner. Stand up on your own damn two feet and kill the Taliban. Do the job yourself and after you have finished ask us for a few billion dollars. That's okay. Your whole @#& *#@* Country isn't worth the life of ONE SINGLE AMERICAN SOLDIER!!!!!
The remark about it being okay that we killed civilians in Germany is meant to be the height of sarcasm, just in case anybody thinks otherwise. Read Kurt Vonneguts,"Slaughterhouse 5". He was there.
