Gold Crown IV Cushions/Replacements

I am thinking about replacing the cushions on my Gold Crown IV. I have never been satisfied with the way they play.

So, if I have them replaced, what cushion do you guys recommend? I assume I have the Brunswick SuperSpeed cushions on the table now.

Plus, if I do have the cushions replaced I am going to have the pockets tightened up, from around 5" to 4.5"

I know I was gone for a little while but isn't "someone" supposed to stop by and tell you that it doesn't matter unless you cut the subrail out completely. Otherwise, it will never play "like a diamond". ;)

Didn't Diamond change their cushion profile b/c they banked short and GC's bank better ?

Stick with Superspeed and get your rails extended.

I had Jerimy Chambers install Artemis Intercontinental cushions and perform the subrail modifications necessary in order to have my GC IV converted to pro-cut pocket dimensions. I could not be happier with the table.

Jerimy operates out of Chicago (so not sure how close that is to you), but I would highly recommend him.

^^^^^ THIS!!! I never understood why anyone would willingly want to make a Gold Crown play like a Diamond. Do subrail extensions and put superspeeds back on it as Joey suggested. there really is no better playing cushions IMO.

Either cushion will play great once the rails are recalibrated.
Some folks prefer to keep the Superspeeds since that is what originally came on the rails. Others like the way Diamonds play and want the same cushions, so they use Artemis.
Depending on where you buy them, the Artemis will cost you around $100 - $125 more than the SS.

Just my opinion, I would put SS back on, and extend them if you want tighter pockets. I would not let anyone touch the wood on the rails with any tool whatsoever that removes wood. I trust the factory machined wood edge of this modern table is correct for the modern SS cushions.

<== Dreams of one day Diamond using the same cushion and rail profile as a GC.

I am from Peoria, Il. Jack Zimmerman is doing the table work on our gc1's now, extended sub rails and Artemis cushions. He is from Batesville, Indiana. Does great work. www.billiardmechanix.net is his website.

Wait till your cloth gets old . Then the thicker rounded tips of Artemis will grab the ball more and bank short .

Btw, there is no need for rail modifications on GC3 or 4 for Superspeed . You just extend the sub rail with pre-cut plywood pieces.

Diamond rails blow.
Artemis belongs on a 3 cushion table, not a pool table.
Red, blue, purple, green, invisible.
I don't care what "color" label comes with it.
The rails suck on pool tables regardless of what fiddling they do with the "profile"

Your opinion sure hasn't slowed down the sale of Diamond tables any, that's for sure!

I had orig superspeed cushions on my 1961 GC that finally needed to be changed 7 or 8 yrs ago. Of course, got new superspeeds, makes sense, right?

Unfortunately, the new superspeeds aint what they once were. within a year the new superspeeds developed hard spots, I'm sure due to crappy quality control now that they are being made in China.

When RKC was coming to restore my GC he suggested the Artemis Intercontinental cushions and I couldn't be happier with the result. German high quality standards vs Chinese, not even close.

I have also heard that the black cushions from Diamond worked well and were a bit cheaper, not sure if those are still avail.

I would def recommend against brunswick superspeeds.

best,

I had my GCII sub-rails modified and Artemis cushions installed, I could not be happier. Everyone who plays on my table thinks its a great playing table yet nobody compares it to a Diamond. If Brunswick cant even get the pocket miters correct do you really think that they get the sub-rails close? It is my belief that you must correct the sub-rail angle on Gold Crowns if you want your table to play its best. I have yet to hear of people disappointed with the way their GCs play after having sub-rails modified. I am sure Mark or Glen could expand on this info a little.

Your table is old and the wood is cut at a different angle from the factory that is not compatable with modern super speed cushions.

A GC4 should work fine with the currently available SS cushions, without any adjustment necessary.

I don't have first hand knowledge of the GC rails manufacture, but I would imagine they are cut in long lengths on a huge wood shaper, that cuts the final profile in one setup. Then cut to length for each rail segment. That type of manufacturing process should lead to extremely consistent rails both within each table, and from table to table. That's the same way wood molding is made. If you get the cheap ass wood molding from home depot for 99 cents, it will still match extremely well from piece to piece. I just can't imagine Brunswick would not know how to make the wood rails on their tables match.

If they don't match for some reason, I think something else is going on. I'd have to see it to believe it, frankly.

Its one thing to do a 50 yr old table where the modern rubber does not fit. Its another thing to cut the wood on a modern GC4 or GC5. I personally think its correcting a "problem" that does not exist.
