Good cue tip shaping tool?

Hey,

So I bought a new cue, my first cue actually and I'm not sure if it's the enjoyment of having my own stuff or if the cue is actually that much better than a house cue(it's only a $180 Viking but it's full hard maple construct, I was told it's a solid cue, etc.) but I've alreaddy seen improvement in my game. So now I'm ready to take the next step and shape my tip--I'm told nickel is the most common people go with and rounding a little helps with English(even though back and forward English are the only ones I know right now)....

So to get down to brass tax, what tip tool would you reccomend for a nickel shape?

Here is a pic of the 6 in 1 tool that I use and it has nickel and dime radius shaper.Enjoy your new cue.

Either the Tiger Le Manifik or the Mezz tip tool, both a little more expensive then average but because
of the material they are made of (not sandpaper) they will last a looong time.

Get a CueShark P.U.P. if you can find one in stock. It's compact, and doesn't use sandpaper like most. It does everything you'll ever need 'on the go' for your tip. Fits easily in any case, unlike some others.

For shaping Williard, Tip Pick for "scuffing" (actually not scuffing but *****ing)...

That's what I use as well.

Thanks for the responded folks, kind of in the middle between the $50 and $20 ones, as I don't know how much I'll actually be using them but definitely appreciate the responses/input.

The last4ever, I believe that is the one from Joel Pope and if it is, that is a terrific tip tool.

I use that one from Joel and the Willard tool, also, a great one.

generally, the dime radius is good with 12.5mm and smaller diameter tips and the nickel for 12.5 and higher.

I have seen folks go way outside those, however.

Also, if you use a layered tip, avoid using a tip-pik type of tool as they tend to mess up the glue between the layers.

oh yeah, that pup shark I know has rec'd some glowing reviews though I haven't tried it myself.

Does anyone think tip length affects play. I see players with nearly no tip. Just put ultra skins on mine. Full size makes for a lengthy tip. Doesn't bother me just curious if play is affected.

Besides shape. Does how you manage your tip matter? As long as you don't miscue. I see scuffers and tip picks. I use a pick. Just wondering.

I use a Willard Dime shaper and it's a beautiful tool.

It scuffs the tip a bit, and shapes it ;)

Personal preference. I, and a lot of others, think a tip usually plays better when it is less than full height. I think sometimes a full height tip can be a bit on the spongey side. I'll just have my installer take it down a little bit, or just do some extra work with my shaper until it plays the way I like. Your scuffer/pik question is also personal preference. I tend to like the tip pik for maintenance after I have it shaped. It wears down the tip less than scuffing and it still gives the desired result.

+1 for the Last4ever. I love that tool!

+1 for the Last4ever. I love that tool! I had to order another when mine went " Missing "
at the pool hall when I left it on a table and walked off to the bar for a few minutes.

Willard dime shape tool is classic, works great, and you can check your work with the cutout dime shape notch on the side. But only shape when needed, use a tip pick to for getting the tip roughed up.

I've noticed the Kamui black soft tips, after half is taken off, hold their shape extra long. With a full tip, it loses shape more often, so I just have it taken down by half when I have them installed.

Apparently you can use the sidewalk outside your pool hall.

But I bought the "last forever tool".. rather pricey but solid construction.

Joel makes a great product and it is American made. I like them, and the Willards tip shaper for keeping the tips in shape.

Tip picks, are only good for people selling more tips.

Do you recommend just using a light scuff with the Willard on the tip instead of the pick? I used to pick a lot while playing, like every other rack. But I noticed my tips wearing down faster. So I use a better chalk now and pick less.
