Sometimes you hear people say that "so-and-so player has your number" meaning that he's really not a better player but he just tends to win you. For example, someone said to Chris Bartram that "Orcollo has your number". Now, this is clearly not the case as Chris has won Orcollo and Orcollo is a better player based on any objective metrics. There have been couple of other posts, which to me have proved to be similar: the player accused of "having someone's number" turns out to be the better player overall.
The objective merit I've used is Mike Page's Fargo Ratings. It's based on past tournament results, which has its own shortcomings. But I'm willing to argue that Fargo Rating is a better source of information than most people's "expert opinion". For an example, at the time of the Mika - Shane match people were talking how this sort of cash game is so different from tournament play. However, the final result reflected their tournament performance pretty accurately. (Even though Mika's finishes were better, Shane's rating was better.) Shane won, because he was a better 10-ball player at the time. Not (necessarily) because he's a better cash game player.
Now, does anyone have good examples of a player who consistently beats another player even if the underdog is a better player against other players? I'm talking about known professional players, because we have data on those people.
