Good hitting customs that use 3/8 x 10 pin size?

Sugartree is a good hitting cue with that pin. I have seen a Sugartree take a lot of abuse and play fantastic.
 
personally i own many mobley 3/8x10 pin cues. solid like a ROCK.
[depending of course, on the taper of the shaft]

....wait for it..... its coming.
 
Am I reading this right? You want to put a McDermot production shaft on a custom cue to get a "good hitting" cue?

Most of the hit is directly proportional to the taper of the shaft and the quality of the wood used in the shaft. If your concern is anything other than cosmetic I would suggest you try the new shaft too. A lot of the cuemakers listed in this thread and others make some real quality product that will far surpass any production shafts.

IMHO the shaft is just as much (if not more) important than the but when searching for a quality custom with a great hit.

I second that. The butt can contribute to the hit depending on the type of wood used and the build quality, but having played with many cues in my life, the shaft is the major difference maker in terms of playability and hit.

What I meant was that I wanted another playing cue in my bag to go along with the McDermott I'm using right now. The custom will use the stock shaft for now.

But it looks like I have a lot of options now. Thanks guys. I tried googling "3/8x10 custom cue" and nothing helpful came up.
 
for 300-400 bucks, Mike Gullyassy is a great cuemaker, and he uses 3/8x10 pins, I have two playing cues from him, and he is also now making a cue for my friend, he build a very solid hitting cues, I love them, he might be little busy takes 3-5 months to get it done if he has tournaments and stuff...check his website out
 
With that you should get a great playing cue. I wonder if Kieth Josie would make you a 3/8 cue? Worth asking Sherry.

I've had 2 Jacoby's and would highly reccomend them. All of the above makers would do you proud. Pick a maker, give him a call and get you're dream. You'll be glad you did.

I hope to never part with my 3/8x10 pin Leon Sly. It is a bacote butt into purpleheart sneaky which is not an attractive wood combination... but it plays like dream!

I have tried not to like this cue. But dang if I dont keep coming back to it. It just feels right to me.
 
I would suggest trying to get an Murray Tucker , Randy Mobley, Little Al Romero, Rick Howard, Andy Gilbert, Roger Petit etc.

Depends on how long you're willing to wait for your custom and what your specs are. There are simply too many variables.

I have a Randy Mobley rosewood plain jane 19 oz cue for sale if you're interested.

Its great that you keep using your playing shaft. I've had mine for over 4 years and end up switching the butt of the cue without having taken a long time to adapt to the shaft as the shaft plays an important role in every cue.
 
Maybe I don't understand the term of "custom cue" .. but if it is a custom to your specs, wouldn't any maker provide a pin that you ask for, since they are making it custom for you?

Having said that, most high end custom makers, especially at the level of money you said you were willing to spend, have a LD option or very high quality, straight grain shaft that they offer with their cue. If you have a shaft that you plan on mating to the butt you are willing to buy, I would suggest sending it to the custom maker to match it up. If not, I would see what comes with their cue and seeing if it is something you would like.

As far as my very humble opinion is concerned, as far as feel, it's like 30% tip, 30% shaft, 15% joint pin size, 15% joint setup (which includes not only base material but also ivory sleeve over wood, brass inserts, etc), and only 10% butt. Once again, only in my opinion, the butt alone (not talking joint pin, joint material, or joint connection) is mostly about what you want the cue to look like.
 
My last two cues with that pin have been a Jack Madden and Scott Gracio. I am happy with both and the Gracio is my current shooter.
