I can not remember the last time I used one, an aluminum cue, or even saw one for that matter.

Can anyone name the brands of aluminum cues out there?

Do any of them play right?

never saw a quality aluminum cue

I have never seen a quality aluminum cue. I bought a couple for my home table when I got tired of certain people destroying my cues but they were Howard Bros. garbage. One of my funnier pool stories is about when two fellows came into a redneck bar with a table in the back room and tried to hustle me. Had they been good I would have bit hook line and sinker because they were toting two of those aluminum Howard Bros. specials.

I have thought about it before, with the quality of aluminum baseball bats and other products I don't see any real reason there couldn't be a quality aluminun cue.

I forgot about them, until just now you mentioned them, when i was around 12 or 13 I remember the red ones and blue ones. they were for sale at the county fair. they were spring loaded things so you colud use them like a regular cue or(this is where it gets good...) you could turn the ferel a half turn and it would release there was a 6" long stem that went into the shaft that was spring loaded so when you just tapped the CB the spring would let go and the tip would be pushed out by the spring and "enhance" the power of the shot.

Sorry for the bad description but i'm real busy right now, and that was along time ago-no i didnt get one.

just one more reason pool is sucking wind, using junk like that-even if you dont know better, cant be fun. if your cue sucks so bad you cant improve, pool wont hold anyones attention. Not to say everyone is looking to improve but who wants to play with garbage-if people wanted to play with garbage there would be admission fees at the dump not Disney Land.

So sayeth all true followers of the One True Cuejunky..

ive never heard of a single good aluminum cue.

I had one guy try to tell me that the cue his brother gave him was aluminum and was better than any other cue on the market. I didn't have the heart to tell him it was a piece of crap. (his brother had passed away already). I just smiled and walked away. (even though he insulted my schon, and she still hasnt forgiven me for not sticking up for her :) )

Maybe no1 has developed the technology yet.

A high tech aluminum break cue maybe?

There is probably a type of aluminum alloy that could work for cues if built right but what would they sound like?

No and No!

technology is probably here, a matter of demand

I seem to remember a disgusting tink and a bit of a boing when I hit with one of the old cues but super lightweight coatings and fillers could probably manage the noise. The biggest issue is finding a coating for the shaft that would give acceptable feel and of course convincing people that an aluminum cue was a quality cue.

Just as a wild guess, I suspect a quality aluminum cue could be marketed in a price range from $75 to $200 dollars. Part of the issue would be volume. If volume sales got going the prices of the cues would come down far lower than that because they could be cranked out in any volume desired with little difference in cost of production. Initial set-up for aluminum cue production would be fairly high but then they could be cranked out by the thousands.

I'm guessing not enough flex in the shaft.

some alloys anneal and temper well

Some alloys anneal and temper well. My guess is that an aluminum shaft could be made to play with more flex than most of the shafts being used now. I have some finely spun aluminum tubing right now that I could make up to a three foot pro taper section out of. Getting enough flex shouldn't be an issue! Flexing how and where you want it to may be a little trickier. No reason for different sections of the shaft to not be tempered and annealed differently though.
