I bolded the last sentence because the fact that she's a girl definitely comes into play. Male players have sometimes had trouble playing strong women players, and as lame a sentiment as that is, it's not an untrue one.

I consider myself to be a stronger 14.1 player than Jasmine, but she's more of a champion than I will ever be. She knows how to win under pressure in situations that I just won't. I doubt I could ever come in 3rd in a World Championship - but there's two sides to that. I might not play as well as Jasmine did deep in that tournament - but Oliver and Mika wouldn't be falling all over themselves in the games against me either. I'd be lucky to get 4 wide open innings against Mika in a race to 200. I heard the games against Mika and Oliver were not anywhere near world-class. I'm going from memory here, but save for a 70 ball run Jasmine made against Mika, the rest of the game was very sloppy from what I heard. They were trading 8s and 12s, though to be fair the equipment was playing tough. There will always be something amazing about beating Mika late in a tournament, but beating Mika when he's running 12s has a little less shine to it, imo.

Another example: there's a video from the first dragon world 14.1 where Jasmine is playing Allen Hopkins. Allen played like a C player. Jasmine did run like 59-and-out but up to that point I've never seen Allen look so bad. In other matches in the same tournament, Allen beat Hohmann and Engert. He wasn't playing like a C player against those guys.

I don't want to make it seem like she's not a very strong player, nor that the only way she can beat great male players is if they let her. She's a great player and she's only going to get better. It's great for 14.1.

That said, in my opinion, you can't deny the effect of the male vs. female phenomenon. It's there, and as long as there are so few strong women players to compete with the men (to the point where it's still an oddity when they play), it's not going anywhere for a while.

P.S. My claim to fame: The only reason Jasmine was able to come in 3rd last year was because I dogged a shot against her. When I played her in the round robin, I missed a marginal shot at 92, which allowed her to make 8 more balls before I won. She made it out of our bracket by something like 2 balls. ;)

Thank you for sharing your experience Steve.

How do you see her faring against Grady Matthews if he plays like the A-player he is? Do you think she could ever spot him 160 going to 500 points like Stu thinks she can?

Jasmin will beat Grady at 14.1.

Grady will beat Jasmin at 1P.

I will beat both of them in a belching contest.

Oh shawn by the way just casue you lost your families rent money before does not make gambling wrong just means that you are irresponsible. I was assuming that your statement was coming from experience.

Nope. First off, I don't gamble. Second, I own my home. No rent. A wife and two kids - I'm a huge fan of stability, and really don't need to prove myself by wagering on pool. I'm secure in knowing how well I play, and feel no need to bark or win money. I have a job - pool is a game.

Hey JB. I'm going to stay out of that particular debate, lol. ;)

People don't "gamble" on the stock market. They invest in companies they think can maximize their ROI.

Gambling takes money out of another PERSON's pocket. Stock market earnings come from a company making money, and passing along those earnings to their shareholders.

People can gamble at anything - cards, board games, pool, or the stock market. But don't equate investing in stocks as gambling. The two are as far apart as night and day.
This is only about half true, and only if you hold a stock for a relatively long period of time - over time the average stock's return on investment is about half dividend payouts and half price appreciation. But since Reaganomics (the early 80s) the average holding period for a share of stock has been getting shorter and shorter, meaning that stock market investments have been based more and more on speculation about short-term price appreciation. This is a zero-sum game just like gambling in Vegas. Night and day are more alike than ever.

In a race to 150 Jasmin needs 8 at the moment. Not looking good for the Gradster.
