The Senior Legends is coming soon! July 18th, 19th, and 20th. (Players' meeting..2 pm.) We've heard from many seniors including Buddy Hall and Nick Varner, both who have said they plan to try to attend. Jose Parica says he is a definite. Details are on my website, www.gradymathews.com and more on my blog. You can call the pool room at 803-957-7665 anytime after noon each day. We are providing transportation from the airport (in Columbia) for anyone who needs it. Also, we've added another hotel anxious to host tournament guests. They are The Royal Inn, 803-750-5060.

There is a chance that you are over 35.

There is no chance you will win the tourney.

This is excellent. I went to a senior tournament back when Mizerak had the tour and was very impressed. Grady, do you think there is a chance to rejuvenate such endeavors and have some success with another senior tour?

Maybe there was a year when there was a senior tour but most years it was one Mizerak event and that was it- IIRC.

I believe that this is just going to be an annual / semi-annual event, not a tour abroad.

1999. I researched it and found Howard Vickery's site with some information. Howard did quite well. Here is an excerpt from his site........

Howard?s most enjoyable victory came last year when he captured the prestigious title of Senior US Open Champion. He had a very strong showing on the 1999 Senior Tour as he posted fourth at the Reno Seniors 9-Ball, fifth at the Tulsa Senior 9-Ball and second at Olathe Seniors 9-Ball.

Steve Mizerak?s Senior Tour is for players fifty years of age and over. In comparison to other professional tours, Howard noted, "It?s different than a regular tour. You don?t have all that infighting and arguing all the time. Most of the guys are out there to play and have fun and almost all of them are retired."

The cost associated with the Mizerak Senior tour is inexpensive. Tournament sites are pleasant and many players bring their wives. Steve is not heavy-handed where rules are concerned which makes for a pleasant atmosphere. Steve says, "?If you want to have a drink at your table, have one. If you can?t handle it by this age you can?t handle it.?" As far as the demeanor of the Senior Tour player, Howard said, "Most of the top players are gentlemen and they are most gentlemanly when they win. To be good at the game you have to have a sense of good sportsmanship overall. I think it?s good for your well-being not to get upset about everything that happens in your life." Steve Mizerak calls all the shots on the Senior Tour. He makes all the decisions and there are no arguments. Whatever he decides to do, he does, and it works for the best. Players have put their trust in Steve to do the right thing. This approach is proving successful as the Senior Tour is growing. Howard said of Steve and the tour, "Of all the successful pool players, he is the most successful. If he can?t promote it, I don?t think pool can be promoted."

I'm not sure why the tour ended or if it lasted more than a year. I also know there was a tour event in French Lick, Indiana.

What the Hell is this ? I've spent the last 4-5 years getting my brains beat out by everyone under 50. Now you want me to participate in a tournament where the guys OVER 50 can pound on me. I don't suppose you'll consider a 75 and over tournament until you get there huh?

Dick

PS You know I'm kidding, Good luck with your effort. Lots of solid players over 50 now. I'd be there but my electric handicap scooter doesn't have a long enough extension cord.

ooohhh, when I saw this, I thought for sure it was going to be a big one pocket tourney. For some reason I just didn't see Grady and 9 ball going together. Still sounds like fun.

I think the last Mizerak senior tour event was in Biloxi, Miss. in 2000. Steve had already been crippled with his stroke, so he could not play; but he was there enjoying himself anyway! There may have been another at his room in Florida the next year, but it may have been --sadly-- a commemorative event. Not sure about that.

In it's heyday the Senior Tour had several events each year.

I believe Grady is planning a big one-pocket tournament in December 5-7 at his poolroom. At least it's listed on the website.

The Miz once held his senior tournament in Southern Pines, NC.

I believe the year was 2000 and the place was filled with pool legends. I had driven up from Myrtle Beach, SC to watch the action. Steve was at the entrance of the tournament room selling tickets. I walked up and asked how much, Steve waved me on through and said, "Now you can't say that I never gave you anything". He was truly a class act.

I hope Grady has much success with his senior tournament. If anyone can pull it off, it's "The Professor".
