Great Player cues

Great player cue?
What does that mean ?
I keep seeing it in ads and usually the person who owns it is only an average or a little above player.
Does it mean , some great players have hit with it and never missed a ball?
I'm not trying to be funny , I just don't see how it can be considered a great playing cue , unless someone who plays great, says it is.
Also , if all these high dollar cues are so awesome , why don't the pros play with them more often .
I remember when most of the really great players played with Szams or Balabushkas in the 60s 70s and even some in the early 80s.
Then it seemed most had a butt from some maker and a low deflection shaft for about 20 years , now it seems a lot are going back to regular shafts.
At least the ones I have talked to , anybody else have any thoughts? Insights.
 
I always took the phrase "player cue" to mean a cue that puts function over design, like a sneaky pete or plain jane style, that is meant solely to be played with, as opposed to more fancy cues that can also be put away and collected.

"Great player cue", however is more along the lines of "hits a ton" and "monster cue". It doesn't mean much and can be said about pretty much any cue out there.
 
People use those terms all the time, and its been an ongoing joke. Personally the only time I call a cue a "player" is if its been played heavily and has dings and chips in it. So by my definition a "player" is a cue that needs a refinish....... :grin:

I've always thought it meant a cue that u play with take too the bar ect not just something that sits in a case like art that u only pull out too show off but idk it could mean somthing else :confused:
 
the people making the claim may mean literally first hand or they could be joining a reputation from many, many.. did i say many? :) who've share past experience... the later is whats most important imho... the reputation of a cue that plays well consistently doesn't happen in a short period of time let alone over night or just because someone claims so...

I seem to attract people who want to show me how great their cue hits.
Most of them feel like ball bats to me.
I also noticed, most of the really straight shooting players, have tips that are as flat as a pancake?
Not sure why.

In my experience, a very few like flat tips and the others just have a tip they like and don't want to change the way it plays by rounding it. I dunno;)

I understand that you aren't trying to be funny because you aren't, although it surprises me how cynical you choose to be.
 
A great cue for someone can be anything from a $100 Player's to a many $1000 custom. It's just what feels right to you after trying it for a few hours. Johnnyt

Many of these cues have been old Hueblers and Meuccis. I am not a Meucci fan by any means, but the old ones who haven't fallen apart have some great ones among their numbers. My favorite cues are my old ones that I bought used. I have McDermott D11, & D19 cues and also an old original un-refinished Titlist with a Predator shaft. I just picked up the D19 about 2 months ago just because I liked them and had it refinished by McDermott with a new G-Core shaft, I was not planning to use this cue as an everyday cue but it hits so nice I just cant help but use it. Oh well, I can always have it re-refinished I guess. The D11 is like new because I got it new but never really used it. The Titlist I got with my Gold Crown, I had a Predator for my Schon and do not care for the combo so I tried it on the Titlist, I can not believe how nice it hits and the sweet "ping" sound it makes.
