just payed for the lathe it will be in stock in 4 to 6 weeks. i live about 75 miles north of the springfield mo showroom, so we will pick it up. i have buddy with forklift to help set in in my shop. i only want to move it once.

help and suggestions ???

what other accessories should i pick up from grizzly to help in cue building ???

and yes i still have my hightower delux screwfeed,
 
Shims, bolts and bolt studs down the cement floor.
You're gonna need a hammer drill.
Bolt the sucker down.

Your left arm is going to have nice workout on that machine.
Unlike old American steel with clutches , these gearhead lathes have really heavy chucks/spindles/saddles.
Forget about threading manually.
 
Is it the 3phase or single phase lathe motor ?
3phase is cake to screw cut with as the motor can go into almost instant reverse.
If it is single phase, I would recommend putting a 3 phase motor on and then run a VFD. That way you can program the start acceleration and stop deceleration rates. Another advantage of the VFD is you can have a normal closed micro switch on the forward wire circuit, and have it as a carriage stop. So when the carriage sets the micro switch, the spindle stops.In my case I have the decel to stop at 0.2 seconds. It is great for internal screw cutting.

Take your time getting it correctly leveled and the twist out of the bed.

From another lathe thread, I posted this advice.
For insert tools, I chose the 16mm triangle format like TNMG160404 =0.4 Radius .
For the 55 deg diamond tools I went for the DCMT11T304 =0.4radius
I chose these because they are very common in industry, a good price point, and most importantly there is a huge range of tip radius, and cutting geometry. So you can by inserts for ali,plastics,wood, right through to CBN and ceramics for turning very hard steels, like HSS.
Another thing I did was modified the steady rest,and made up some plates with 40X52X7 bearings. So I have a Taig chuck to use as a steady rest, either the 3jaw ,4 jaw or the 4 independent. I also made a ER40 collet chuck as well .That has been used the most with delrin collets. Then I went mad and also made some delrin sleeves, but have only used one of the sleeves once. lol
In your case, it is really advantageous to make an Ali steady rest, way lighter than the Cast one, and for what you are making more than rigid enough.

If you have not used bigger and more powerful lathes before, 2 things, if you have any doubt about doing anything, stop and really think about it.
Second, do not have any loose clothing that can get caught and rolled up in the lead screw or feed bar. Loose clothing and long hair can be very dangerous.

A last thing, learn what the controls do , ie forward reverse saddle feed, crossslide feed
etc. The settings for saddle feed rates versus screw cutting feed rates etc. There is nothing worse than seeing someone engage the cross feed only to have it going the wrong way from not being familiar with it's direction. Little arrows stickers by the controls help until you get familiar with it.

I don't think you need to put holes in your garage and bolt it down. Get it as level as you can and call it good. Put the dead center in the spindle and use it to line up the tailstock.

Make sure your buddy's forklift can fit through your garage door with the forks raised in a position to get the lathe where you want it. Extenda boom type work very well in this situation. If it's still crated you probably won't have a problem.
 
Might want to check working height. Most lathes that I have seen including mine are kind of short. I mounted mine on 6 x 6 timbers and then put wheels on the bottom of the timbers. Even at 1000 lbs. one person can move it around and the work height is perfect so you are not hunched over to work.

I moved my shop and rented a machinery moving rig that has two side section frames with wheels and small forks that fit into the base of my lathe stand on each side.

These units have hydraulic jacks that lift the entire lathe up so the caster wheels pick up the load. There is a very heavy nylon strap and ratchet system that allows both jacking end frames to squeeze around the lathe making it and integral unit system that one man can easily move around.

I moved my Enco lathe and I think the Grizzly has the same square recesses in the base of the stand on each side that accepts the small forks. If not, you can make the forks grab under the frame. Some lathes it won't work on like a Clausing but lathes that sit on separate stands should be good to go.

It cost me about 100.00 to rent one. This was my local rental center and I was surprised that they had three units in stock so it must be a device carried by other rental houses.

Lathes are very top heavy so be very careful and use prevention rigging to stabilize the load from shifting or rotating if you use a forklift.
