Not to derail, but is there such a thing as a Gus with a Spain arm?

Thanks

Kevin

Not to the best of my knowledge. I believe George used some Spain forearms as well as some of Gus', but other than the Wico cues and of course some Titlist conversions, I believe Gus made all of his forearm pieces.

Hey Kevin,
At the time when Gus started to make cues, Burton had just sold the business to John Davis. Gus did use Wico and Titlist blanks in the very begining, but he didn't use a Burton Spain blank on any of his cues.

That's what I thought. I was surprised to see it asked because Gus was a superior blank maker, probably the best ever, some of George's best cues where from Gus blanks, and I just couldn't imagine Gus using anyone else after he got going and had it perfected.

Great cue.

Good luck with it.

Thanks again

Kevin

PS Wait! Burton Sold his blank business? Is this something he did when he was still healthy? Like he just decided to get out of the blank biz? Or, when he had to retire did he sell one "division" to Davis and the other to Hercek?

Obviously I wasn't intending to insult the cue :) - as I mentioned, the veneer pattern and colors were EXACTLY the same as my Spain, or it wouldn't have crossed my mind. After I posted the question, I realized it was probably absurd, given when Spain started making blanks, quality of Gus blanks, etc., but figured it might generate some interesting discussion, so I left it up.

Regarding Spain's business/retirement, my understanding is that when he retired due to illness, the entire business went to Joel Hercek. John Davis retired in the mid-70s and Burton Spain continued to make cues into the early '90s.
