Hello Simon,

What a find....that cue and box are truly a unique and rare combination. And worth like $$$$$$.

Congrats,

Scott

Cheers mate, looks like you have been buying Showman's now judging by your avatar.

Another great find for your collection.
Seems like you now have at least two cues that I love (there may be more but there are a few cues that have not made it to the gallery I am sure).

Talk to you later,
Myron

Can't start showing everything on here, Myron. What would I have to talk about if I did it in one go, lol!

Thanks for all the comments and extra info about James Christopher guys. Knowing about the owner certainly adds to the mixture of owning such a historic piece.

Orange Ring

Thanks, Simon, ...:)
I didn't realize Gus had an Orange Ring.. You are the 2nd Collector that told me in 2 days..
Here's a photo of the Orange Billet and a piece of the Rosewood..
P.M. me if you would like a Set for your Gus Szamboti Cue. I think I can get another set out of that Billet.. This time, they will be in Polyurethane

The right idea!!

Collect and play with the cues. The cool thing is that each cue has its own personality. To put a laminated shaft on a cue is to put a mask on it. Nice cue, Simon. I think Gus would be happy you have it.

> I've hit about 100 balls with that cue, back when James had it. I never wanted to give it back. According to legend,no one bought more cues from Gus than James did. If they were all this good,I would have tried to horde them too :D.

Simon,
Awesome find. Congratulations and I hope all is well.
Tom

Thanks Tom, everything good here my friend. Hope you managed to finally get the cues you were looking for.

Sean....thanks man, this is what its about....and the cue will still see some action albeit on a smaller scale than what James probably did lol.

TommyT....what a nice thing to say mate, I would like to think Gus doesn't mind me owning his cues too.

Tommy-D....again mate....that adds to the mix! So you shot with this when James owned it? Great stuff. We really have such a huge network on AZbilliards. I for one don't know what I would do with it!

Nice acquistion Diamond Simon. I shudder to think what you paid for it. For some interestsing information on James Christopher, if it's the same person, you should get a copy of R.A. Dyer's book The Hustler and the Champ which has a pretty interesting take on Christopher. Now that I am thinking about it it might have been Bruce Christopher in the book. Nickname SuperStroke.

In any event I am sure that our pool historians here will correct or confirm on this point. The book is a good read anyway and well worth having.

Well this isn't the fanciest Gus on the planet by any means. Just a 4 point players Gus in original condition. The points and butt sleeve are Brazilian Rosewood, which is rare. Points and veneers are perfect as you would expect them to be. The wrap is Penn linen.

A very nice cue but with the addition of the original shipping box from Gus make it a little more special. Shipped in September 1980. Check out the C.O.D. amount on the box.....$263-29!!! Don't we wish we had a time machine?

What this cue represents is honesty. Its a good, honest players cue made by one of the greatest cue makers of all time. The cue has been well used and so it should....this is what they are made for....lets all not forget that. I sometimes think about what it would have been like to order a cue from Gus. Imagine your new Gus turning up on your door step like this cue did nearly 28 years ago for the lucky customer.

Its cues like this that re-establish why I got into collecting cues in the first place.

Si

PS: Whilst Gus never made me a cue, his very talented son did. When my new Barry S turned up, I had to take the rest of the day off work.....just too excited to concentrate, lol....and I have used it since I got it 2 years ago. Play pool with the cues, don't be afraid and shut them in a box forever. They are made to hit balls around a table....so just do it!!

What a gorgeous cue.

Great pick up Si:D ,I had that cue in my hand once. BEAUTIFULLY MADE Rosewood Gus Szamboti, this cue totally player cue, but those points are as perfect as it can be. I wonder how he made those points so perfect back then without all the new technology we have now:confused:  I guess that's where it comes to great tallented Gus Szamboti and solid hitting cue that he made. I am glad I got 1 Gus and 1 Barry:D :D :D :D. That one Barry Szamboti I got is a great sold hitting cue also.
P.S. DOESN'T HURT TO MORE Szamboti Cues:D

I would love to have my hands on the cue you owe me Kenny
