Thanks for the reps Fast Lenny and Asbani.

I noticed in one photo there a rackman lending against the wall.

Another photo, you can see, what look like, a policeman cap.

The photo that look like a tear, might just be the piece of paper you see in another photo hanging.

Jay thank for the identification of the players.

I was just guessing. I may be wrong on all of them! Like I said, Junior Goff would know better than me. Hitchcock and Don Watson were young men in 1947, and in their prime. And Don was prematurely bald like me. :)

Those are interesting photos. Was air conditioning wide spread in the 40s? Tampa would have had tough wet tables without AC. Those cues that they are playing with, what did they hit like? Anything like cues today? I always look at those older pics and wonder what it would be like to play in those days, with the same equipment.

One things for sure, this Asian guy would have been shown the door pretty quickly by whitey lol.

Johnnyt Thank for the rep.

Uwate check this out. We all might have to go to Dexter,NM

Jay, maybe someone can spot an announcement/poster in the photos that might help identify the players. Here some information about the photos:

These photos are from the Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library's Burgert Brothers Photographic Archives.

They state that: Copies of prints may be used in exhibits, displays and publications, providing a credit line stating:

Courtesy, Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library System accompanies each print.

Please respect this request.

Looks like my Brunswick Madison snooker table before I refinished it, minus a couple of legs. Quite a turnout! Definitely before TV and Barcaloungers!

I am pretty sure it is the table I have...Brunswick__(I forget! Wellington?).

Great photos and reps to you. Thanks for posting them. Looking at them I could not help but think that the photo, taken today, would be missing about 3/4 of the crowd...off playing video poker. Gee...ain't progress great.

If you'll notice, the legs are the same dimensions from the top to the bottom. They also have white rectangular inlays on each side of the legs and on the skirts like in this picture: http://www.billiardrestoration.com/Tables/madison.htm
It looks nothing like the Wellington shown here: http://www.brunswickbilliards.com/our_rich_history/antique_tables/wellington.html
which has fancy moldings on the legs and a tapered body.
Here's a couple of pictures of my Madison before and after refinishing:
http://www.users.qwest.net/~swjcarolyn/images/snooker_comp.JPG
http://www.users.qwest.net/~swjcarolyn/images/snooker_new.JPG
You can see I added molding to the edges of the legs and across the bottom of the sides/ends to avoid the kicks and scrapes to these vulnerable edges that are just covered with walnut veneer.

I stand corrected! Can you tell how much looking at mine gets?!:o

Those pictures are classics. Thanks for sharing. :)

One thing that stands out to me, sadly, is that every single person is in the picture is a Caucasian male. There are no women or people of other ethnicities present. :(

Hey, that's a colored fellow and a chick right behind the light fixture in both pictures! Back then it was segregated JAM. There were famous black pool halls as well. One in Norfolk comes to mind. I think there was also a Chinese guy in there also. :D

Thanks for pointing that out. I didn't see it.

I remember one time Geese and I went down to 7th and T. When we walked in the joint, everybody stopped playing and looked at us. There was an awkward pregnant pause.

Then, from the back of the pool room, up walks none other than Strawberry. He greeted Geese and me, and then everybody in the joint returned to playing pool. :p

We were on the road one time and stopped in Petersburg, Virginia, I think it was, in the late '70s. They had a huge sign out front that said NO WOMEN ALLOWED.

In the '60s for a few years, I lived in a boarding school in New Jersey, and it was out in the sticks. The closest town was Matawan, New Jersey. The drug store in town had a huge sign out front that said NO HIPPIES ALLOWED. :D

Man, we've come a long way, baby! :)
