Has any pool promoter tried this?

Outdoor pool tables. Maybe not for the whole tournament but say, from the semifinals on? The reason I ask is I saw a world poker tour event somewhere in the carribean. They were under a tent but the sand and ocean backdrop was a nice change of pace. I think it would be pretty cool to see Efren or Archer shoot with shades on behind lake Michigan and chicago's skyscrappers. Do you think this is cool or stupid. Plausible, or ridiculous? Your comments please.

There was a pro event recently (in Spain I believe) that was set up in a tent and weather played havoc with it. It was/is supposed to have been finished later at another event.

Personally, I played in a tournament several years ago put on by Canadian Club whiskey. The finals were played at Harrah's in a conference room and the championship match (race to 5 8-ball) was played outside in the courtyard area. In the area was a bar and shops. It was very festive with many people watching, dancing or whatever. It definitely affected one of the players and the match was over rather quickly.

I think playing outside poses many variables such as weather (rain, wind, etc.), table conditions (humidity), sunlight, etc. that can outweigh any positives such as scenary, etc.

Just my .02

The Predator pro event in Spain will actually conclude Sept. 13-14 in Manila, immediately prior to the scheduled Predator Ten Ball Championship there. Sixteen players remain from the first event.

I promoted a WPBA tournament at Hollywood Park in a pavilion area that was covered by a large tent with plastic sides, in 2000. The ladies were not all to happy at playing "outside", as they called it. Normally the weather is very mild at that time of year (October). But this year it got pretty cool at night, down into the high 50's. We added the large space heaters you see at some outdoor restaurants, but it wasn't enough to heat the large area.

The women will never forget that event and some still won't forgive me. It would have worked out fine if we didn't have some unseasonably cooler weather. Normal temperatures that time of year would have been 10-15 degrees warmer. Meanwhile I added $15,000 to the prize fund and everyone got paid! Julie Kelly won that one, beating Karen Corr in the finals. Maybe she was more used to playing in the cold.

Lighting would be a fiasco wouldn't it? Don't want shadows or lack of light to keep you from seeing the ball correctly, plus what do you do if there's a stiff breeze out?

Yeah, that's why they feel that way...you just keep telling yourself that!

Wind rolls would have to be dealt with.

I've seen bowling outside, but I doubt the wind had much to do with the outcome of any of the throws.

Ok, so this has been tried before and apparently not well received. What sounded like a neat concept is apparently not very practical given all the factors you guys have mentioned. Thank you all for your input.

So far, people have mentioned "tented" events, which is not completely outdoors.

If I recall correctly a little over ten years ago there was an event in Redondo/Manhattan Beach, Ca - won by Joe Pachanella, that was held completely outdoors.

Also, some time back: Ming Ng, Jeanette Lee, Steve Mizerak, and Mike Sigel did an exhibition (Camel Tour Related) in Daytona, FL that was completely outdoors. See pics in the link below.
