Ok I had to ask this just to see if anyone knows of any pros
who played leauge pool 1st ,then grew into a pro level player ?
Any leauge is ok but I guess since I just droped APA I was kind
of curious about this .Not that I intend on playing at a pro level
I have other intrest that keep my inner pro at bay .Let me know
who and how if you know ;)

I know that SVB played VNEA, but that's not to say that is the only experience that he had. He did however play leagues for several years. In fact he won the VNEA masters two years straight.

As for APA I don't know, as we don't do APA leagues here. I'm sure that some pro played APA at one time or another though. Not that you can consider that "producing" a pro.

I believe that I have heard that Jennifer Barretta played in the APA prior to going pro.

I believe there are several people (males) that played in BCA before going pro but not sure about a male that played APA prior to going pro.

One of the issues with APA is that you have to be over 21 in order to play, or at least that was the rule when I played. Most Pros (male) are already beyond APA once they turn 21.

JR Calvert, the owner of Inside pool magazine was APA 7 before he qualified to play in the MPBA ( Mens pro billiards Association ) which later became PBTA ( Professional Billiards Tour association )then became camel Tour.JR calvert was ranked in top 32 in his pro carrier .

APA Pro

Louis Ulrich used to play in the San Diego APA a few years ago. And look what he is doing now in Pro Pool.,

Road Pros

We have a couple Road Players in our APA right now, but that's a whole other story. One of them is fairly well-known across the country. I have heard of several female players that were once in the APA, but can't remember their names. SVB played with the BCA at one time, didn't he?

Several pro-ability players have played in the APA. Louis was already far above the top level APA players when he was in the league. Others that come to mind are Scott Tollefson, from CO, Jeff Sargeant & Ike Runnels, from IL, and Jason Kirkwood, from MI. I'm sure there are others. All of these guys played well above the APA rankings, but just got in, either to try to cash in on the national level prizes, or just to play with some friends.

For the record, the APA was NEVER (and is not now) intended as a stepping stone to the pros.

i played apa for several years in tampa before i got picked for the ipt, the apa can be frustrating but practice is practice

Henry Brodt was an APA member. He won the US Amateur back to back and then played in some pro events. Not sure if hes still playing. John Binion is another one that comes to mind.

Southpaw

Yes, Jennifer Barretta played APA (on my team) as well as Caroline Pao and Liz Ford. I also believe Tony Robles told me he played one or two seasons.

Add this name to the list

Ron Parks was the first person to ever win the APA US Amateur and I guess he is considered a pro player, he finished 13th in the US Open the year that they had the largest number of entrants.--Leonard

I could be mistaken, but I don't think you have to be an APA member in order to compete in the APA US Amateur. I believe that is the one, and only, APA tournament that allows non-APA players.

I believe you're correct there - and I seem to recall, looking at the webpages for the qualifying touraments, that APA members simply pay a little less than non-APA members as far as entry fees go.

Not to offend anyone or to start something.... but playing in an open tournaments with the big boys does not make you a pro.... even if you do well! you'll never see some of the names mentioned here in a pro only by invitation event.

There are many very good players out there that can become pros if they wanted to be pros but playing good does not make you a pro.

I think Henry still shoots APA here in Illinois. He is a regular at the US Amateur tournaments.

Well dont leave us hanging-Tell us what makes a pro.

These guys and girls are nothing compared to the greatest pro to ever emerge from the APA....FAST LARRY :D

Koop...I know you're kidding! :D Of course, FL never played in the APA...and if he had, he would likely have been kicked out for poor sportsmanship.

As for the definition of what makes someone a pro player...it is essentially deriving all of your income from playing pool...be it tournament winnings, gambling, teaching, artistic pool, or anything else. As such, I am considered, by definition, a pro player. Can I beat guys like Johnny Archer and Earl Strickland? Sure, on a given day, under the right circumstances. Can I beat them, like they beat one another? Heck no...if I had to PLAY these guys regularly, to make a living (like they do to one another)...I would STARVE to death! :D However, that doesn't mean I am any less a pro player than they are. It's just a different scale. I already beat almost ALL of them, where it counts the most...at the BANK! :D
