Have you ever played with a McDermott G Core shaft?

I am just curious on your opinions on what you thought of the G Core shaft when you played with it?

Does it hit more like a standard maple shaft, or does it hit anything like a Predator for example?

Did you like the playability of the shaft, or dislike it for any reason at all?

I am going to try one out (buy before I try), but just curious what I should expect from the hit of it.

Just curious about others opinions of the shaft.

By the way, about the only LD shaft that I ever really loved was the Predator pre cat 314 shaft.

Did not care for any of the Predator shafts made after the pre cat 314 (thought they were too stiff, and just did not play good with them).

I really liked the original OB shaft for the few months that I used one.

I also really loved the Universal Smart Shaft (forgot about that one for a while), if any of you remember those shafts, that are no longer made.

I have tried some of the Tiger, and other OB shafts (like the OB2) also for short periods of time, but was not too crazy about them.

Just curious how the G Core shaft compares to any of these other LD shafts out there.

Thanks.

I'll confess to having hit a few balls with one. It sure didn't hit like my Josey standard shaft.

The cue's owner liked the hit while it just felt weird to me.

I think it all depends on what you get used to, or like.

I've had 3 cues with a g- core shaft and love the hit...i also had the i-2 shaft and loved that also...currently i'm playing with a g-core...

I also loved the original 314 shaft but never cared for 314-2....

Just my opinion but i really like the g-core...OH...I HAD THIS G-CORE CUT TO 12.75MM AND LIKE IT EVEN MORE...

Quit effn around get something and stick with it.;)

I have always dealt in cues and playing w diff stuff all the time is
Not a good idea.

I play w Gcore shafts. Price is good. Readily available.Great warranty.

I have a 12.75 McDermott i2 which has the carbon fiber tube for the full length of the shaft. I like it & think it is more like a regular maple but I ultimately settled on the OB Pro 11.75 because of the conical taper & the more firm feeling.

But there is certainly nothing wrong with the i2 & it is considerably Low Squirt.

Best 2 You & ALL.

Thanks for all of the replies. I really hope I will like the one I am getting (which is 12.5mm). I always liked a smaller mm shaft, with a very long taper. I tried the conical tapered shafts, and did not like them for some reason. I think the OB2 uses the conical taper, and I did not like it.

I use the G-Core as well and like it. It is the only shaft I have owned since I started playing and bought my first stick 3 years ago.

I, however, am apparently not as shaft sensitive as others here. (hold the jokes, my wife is not amused) I have played with many and it really doesn't seem to make much of a difference to me for MOST hits. Clearly, putting side on the ball it will make a difference but I rarely do that and when I do I have to be a little conscience of the squirt which I would not be with my familiarity of the G-Core.

Beyond squirt and tip type/size, both of which you adjust to, I believe it is 100% mental as to feel that makes on person claim one shaft is better over another, so find a shaft you like and stick with it.

I have a G-core and an I-3 along with a fair amount of the solid maple shafts. I prefer the G-Core over the I-3. It seems like it fits right between the I-3 and solid shaft. I still occasionally pull out the I-3 but it's just a little whippy for me. That being said I have a CDX on the way, can't wait to see how that feels.

I had a McDermott G-series cue some time ago. It had 12.5 mm G-core shaft and was a very nice playing cue. The deflection is what prompted me to change, as I'm a Predator fan. The dieflection might be lower than the standard McDermott maple shaft, but it's definitely higher than the true Ld-shafts like Predator and OB. The feel is not like an all-maple shaft. It hits a little bit harder, even if it's not very stiff. I did feel I had good cueball control with it, and there was no particular shots that gave me trouble etc.

Overall the cue was a great playing package. It had a very nice balance to it and a good hit, once you got used to it. It also IMO had a very high quality for the price. As for the shaft alone I'm not entirely sure how good it would be as a "stand alone" shaft, bought for another cue. For one thing the collar diameter of McDermotts are inconsistent so if you have a McDermott you'd better send it to them and have it matched.

I had been playing with Predator shafts for several years then purchased a G-Core and I didn't care for it one little bit. I just never cared for the way it felt. In speaking with the McDermott rep this past summer it was described to be as an "in between" shaft from solid maple to an LD shaft. Keep in mind that the G-Core really isn't an LD shaft, I think McDermott calls it a High Performance shaft.
I have friends that love it. So I think it's a personal preference thing.
If you have been using an LD shaft, chances are you won't care for it, but there are exceptions.

I think that I prefer a standard maple shaft over most of the ld shaft out there (and I have tried many of them over the years). The only 2 that I ever really loved were the Pre cat 314 (the ones that just have a 314 on them, and not cat logo), and the Universal Smart Shafts (really loved those). Can't go wrong with a really well made standard maple shaft (made with high quality wood). There are many LD shafts that I have not tried out yet though, but I have a feeling that I would not like them (like the newest Predator Z shafts and the Mezz Hybrid Pro II for example).

Most cue repair guys and every custom cue maker can or could make you a non laminated LD shaft at 12.3 mm in a 3/8 X 10 pin wood to wood , Or at least I could.

I tend to lean towards full maple shafts over laminated LD shafts, and when I first played with a G-core shaft I really liked it.

For the money, you can't go wrong.

Once you get it, the best thing to do is stop shopping around and second guessing yourself. Embrace it and get used to shooting with it. Going from shaft to shaft to shaft, looking for that "magic bullet" is a fools chase that will not only cost you money, but also slow down your development as a pool player.

Its not bad.... A bit stiffer hit than a traditional maple shaft. I could live with it if I were not such a 'Shaft Hoe' ....... I have put a lot of players this past year into some basic Mc Dermottswith the G core shaft and they were all happy.

First cue was a Mcdermot with standard maple, second cue had a G core. At the time I loved it. After owning other cues and shafts I probably wouldnt go back because it feels kind of funny compared to laminated LD or solid shafts. I play with a 314-3 and love it. I will change butts but the only other shaft I'd play with is the hybrid pro II.
