Also known as "dumping". Only done by the scum of the earth.

Not going to argue, but sometimes in order to keep a team intact, this is what happens.

I'm an APA team captain, and our numbers are so high that if one or two people move up, we will have a difficult time fielding a team, and being able to play.

I've never asked a player to dump, but I would be lying if I said I'm not concerned about not being able to field a team with players I've been shooting with for over four years now.

league play in 1967

1st year i ever played in league, i tried a hard as i could to win every game. fast forward to 2007. i now play in a rural area with about 20 to 25 teams in a 30 minute drive distance. i'm team captain and we play bca. we are 1st or 2nd every session. if we have won a round and there is still one more game play, i will call it to the attention of my teammate and let him make the decision to keep his handicap low or try to win the game. maybe not the most honest thing to do, but everyone in our league does the same thing. when in rome !!!!!!!

No. No. No. Never. I may not play my best sometimes but that's down to inconsistency. I hate to lose.

I answered "no", but for me it's not a pride issue like the "no" option suggests, it's an issue of goals. What I want to gain out of my pool league is not so much victory as it is learning, improvement, and fun. I'm not learning much, improving at all, or having much fun when I'm not playing as well as I'm able, so for me there's not really any incentive to lay down. I actually view it as an achievement when I go up a skill level. I'm hoping to go up to a 7 in APA 8ball any time now (I have a very good record as a 6).

This is the way it should be looked at. League handicaps should be done fairly and allow everyone the chance to make getting better be a good thing, not a bad one. When I was finally moved up a notch, I was thrilled... even though it took a few weeks to settle in a win again.

I totally agree. I have never asked a player on my team to lose, and I have never thrown a game just to keep my handicap low. I even had one player on my team running up innings in one of his matches. I went to the other captain and told her if she wanted to file a protest, that myself and every other member of MY team would sign it. Then I found out that as captain, I could tell the league operator to raise this guy's handicap and lock it in, and it would happen. You know what I did the next day!

I did throw one game one time. I was teaching a group of kids at a campground one summer. After the lesson, they all wanted to challenge me. I proceeded to win against all the 14 and 15 year olds, but for some strange reason, the youngest (10 years old) managed to beat me;) . He was the hero among all the older boys for the rest of the week.

Dumping/laying down in leagues is lame to me. Isn't the point of a league to make yourself a better player and be proud of the fact that your rank is going up?

But since I don't play leagues, yes I have layed down. You can go ahead and lump me in with the scum of the earth. As a college student/part time worker for $10 an hour I don't have the spare cash to be giving out the weight people ask for.

I cannot play the game to less than my level on purpose. I used to play for TNT's which is a strip joint in Colo Springs. The girls would come over topless and want to play a game of 8-ball. I would just run out on them. What a dunce I was. They would actually get mad because I wasn't distracted, but in reality I used it for a mental concentration excercise. I got pretty good at it too! What a dunce I was!

Apparently, the last nail in my coffin to Billiards Hell was to lay down a match just to gain some undeserved handicap towards my nemesis (lets call him Rob Blewett) just to beat his ass again. Am I alone in my incendiary activities..?

if you have ever play for money or on the road, YES you have done it to try to get a spot, in more sports than pool!!! and yes i am guilty, what is the punishment??? i put food on the table in the early 60"s with this move lose 10-15 $ on monday . then on fri when they go there checks, cash in about 125-150 $ week, not to bad for a 10$ investment!!!and they never figured it out!!!!  :D :D :D

You can argue all you please, if you wish. You'll never get me to accept this kind of despicable behavior. This is what leagues have done to pool, the apa especially.

Don't blame the leagues. You can't take a group of people and say they are responsible for the actions of the few.

I will admit that the handicapp system APA (CPA here in Canada) does incourage sandbagging. This system may have been put in place to keep new players coming into the league but it doesn't take into account the players they lose because of it.

Bad business model.

Yup, had to lose in one league or wouldn't have been able to get on a team or at least stay on a team. Not that I am that strong a player, but when you play to win, your handicap will show it and this affects the team and the captains desires for how to use each player on the team. I have been instructed to 'bag. Been let go for playing too strong against a captains request and not allowed to join teams because of my ability.

Another local league, I was almost kicked out of the league because I started playing stronger and stronger and the common folk didn't think I was common anymore. The options were to start recruiting stronger players or kick me out. They didn't kick me out, but ultimately, they started recruiting better players from farther away and the character of the league was lost as the core players couldn't handle the challenge and stopped playing. Thus washing out the league. Big fish/little fish example. Sad thing is, the league was actually a great group of bars and people. I was not the only one they wanted to kick out but had a big part in it.

Yep

Yes, Peer...you are alone. Not in your laying down. But in the fact you offered this information freely of your own will.

Now you've gone and corrupted pool. Now people will start betting money on pool.

Where will it stop?!?!?

I have done it once and only once and never again. I was only subbing for a team and never played league before. For newcomers, your handicap for the first 3 weeks is based on your nightly performance. It was the last round and the last game. Now I know why they put me in the position. They told me not to make more than 5 balls, this way their team would win 3 out of the 5 points. The thing that pissed me off the most is that I lost my first three game, not intentionally, and here is the forth game against the other team's toughest player and I could have won. This has been over a year and it's still eating at me. My captain told me the other day that I need to keep my handicap down so that we weren't spotting the other team so many balls. I told him for me to do that, I would have to start losing. He thought about it for a second and changed his mind.

We actually played a team that, within the first week and on two seperate games, intentionally with ball in hand, made the eight ball so they would lose the game and keep their handicap low. I guess they didn't see it in the rule book that they actually get the max points, what you would normally get for a win and we recieved double those points. They were on the phone with the league operator complaining, but rules are rules.

In one of my early matches in the APA, I was encouraged to lose a match to keep my handicap down, but as the match dragged on, it started to dawn on me that the other guy was dogging it too! What a ridiculous situation!

The next day I felt dirty, and resolved to always play my best. I have since come to realize that there are so many people "managing" their skill levels that it defeats the concept of handicaps. It is a basic flaw in the system because the team needs to stay within the 23 point limit and that pressures team members to keep their skill levels at existing levels, or they will limit the team's options and chances of winning.
