Thought I'd stop in on my way home for a few quick games , grabbed a house cue with a nice "round" tip and went at it.

Sheesh , after like a dozen different cues I couldn't find one that I had any confidence in. Too heavy , too light , buzz , ring , clank . . . and the tapers , dear god the tapers.

Dang , what happend ? Am I spoiled for life ?

I feel the same way dude. If i walk in a place and grab a house cue I cant shoot to save my a$$ lol. Maybe I need to play with one more often and start gambling like that. You cant get a money game around here if you walk in with a case. LMAO

Buy a cheap cue with a cheap 1x1 case (total under $100) and throw it in the back of th car for situation like these... Just install a decent tip on the cue and you're good.
The Only three things that will make a house cue unplayable for me will be:
1. a tip that is not glued well (I got a shaper on my key chain at all times so the tip shape doesn't matter)
2. if the cue is too heavy (over 19oz)
3. If it's a 'slip-on' ferrule/tip

Over here most places have a 50-50 ratio between pool and snooker tables So usually If I find myself in a club without a cue I'll use a house snooker cue, it is lighter, no problem finding an 18oz cue, and the tip is usually glued better (can't explain why...). It's like playing with a Z shaft that has a bit more deflection....

I played with house cues for many years. If it had a tip on it and the weight wasn't loose I could play with it. I could play with a loose weight too but I hated it. I still grab a stick off the wall sometimes. A quick scuff and buff of the shaft and maybe a little tip work and I am good to go. As long as it only had a single bend in it I might play with the most warped stick in the house. Slip on tips only bug me if they are off to one side when someone has forced one that is way to small onto a stick. If the tip goes one way and the warp another it makes things a little tougher.

Playing with a house cue sometimes will help your game in my opinion. It makes me play a simpler game and pay more attention to patterns. I shot a tournament with one a few weeks ago. I didn't win but it wasn't because of the stick. :smile:

Its nice to have you own cue that you are used to..... but you should try and make yourself play with many different cues. Basically you should be able to play just as proficiently with a house cue as with your own. You have to adjust the amount of side spin you use because of the throw.

For years I kept a tip tapper and a burnisher in my pocket - and played with a cue off of the wall. Back then, I was usually good if I found a good Dufferin with a nice tip on it. I'd tap the tip down, and burnish the shaft with a piece of leather. If I didn't have the leather, I would go to the rest room and get a brown paper towel, that works well also.

Every so often I will leave my cue at home, and find one off the wall, just to see how I shoot with something else. The biggest problem you will find these days is that most house cues have no balance - and the feel either too heavy or too light. Every once in a while you'll find an old one here and there that plays and hits well.

What I cannot shoot with are those graphite cues that you find down at Click's. Those have no life to them whatsoever. Were you trying to shoot with one of those? I hope not! I was down at Sportstown a few nights ago and I found a real nice - older house cue that had a nice hit to it. Those are usually few and far between.

Do I think your spoiled? Nahhhh... not at all.

I'm no great shooter, but I do play and practice often, and find it very difficult to get used to a different taper shaft that's usually dinged pretty bad, a tip that's flat, and a cue that's possibly 57" as opposed to 58". No to mention a cue that's weight and balance my be very different than mine.

I have a two piece Dufferin with the signature joint (metal to metal) that really plays nice. I throw it in the back of the car if I think that I'll end up in a pool room before I get home to pickup the heavier artillery.

I totally agree that the new house cues have no balance or life to them, this is another reason why I would prefer a house snooker cue.
Actually, after a few nights playing with a snooker cue I made up my mind to give the Z shaft a real chance.... (so far I really like it)

I don't even consider those coated cues (graphite or fiberglass) as pool cues but since they are around I should add them to the list I've posted above...

In general, I agree with you Fred....but what about SVB? Adam Behnke & Justin have commented that his Joss/Schon is the biggest pile they've ever picked up. Remember the ferrule noise from AC3?

I think that at the very least, there is a certain level of arrow you get before there's a point of diminishing returns. I don't know how to quantify that point.

Shane's Joss/Schon combo still is balanced and tapered like he likes. And maybe with his hearing aid turned off, he just couldn't hear how bad that ferrule sounded. The rest of us... we couldn't turn it off.

ahh the good ol wallabushka...i know it well. I shot with one in a bar that was curved like a banana. Another one had a tip that looked like it should be growing underneath a log.

I still had shitloads of fun. I love pool!

Yeah , I've been thinking that lately. I'm more in a position now where I have to 'run' to go play and not make it back to the house.

I think I'd be fine as long as it was just a solid chunk of lumber , less that a baseball bat taper and a good tip in it. Didn't have any of those last night.

Very true on all accounts. Think I'm going to order a Willards for the glove box right now.



The indian and arrow comments always get me too, I shoot 3D archery and let me tell you , I shoot all handbuilt custom arrows that (by the dozen) cost as much as many pool cues. Your not often going to see a competitive archer shooting hand planed cedar any that do are using ones that rival or exceed the others in cost.

I was probably a bit off anyway , I guess that's why they call it practice.

a bunch of us locals in this bar way back in NYC were playing each other when one player was using the house broom while the other player had to play the opposite hand... winner stays, the next player gets the broom.

The "broom" player always won....
