Hello....and I have a question.

Hey everyone, just wanted to say hi. I've been lurking around here for the last couple of years and most of my questions have been answered by the search function. I'm from the east coast of Canada and started out playing snooker and straight pool....I play a lot of 8 ball these days.
The question I have is about my break cue. It's a J & J and I put a hard leather tip on it and it breaks well. I've had my eye on an orange crusher for the last couple of week and might pull the trigger on one. So my question is....what makes a break cue a good one? What should I expect if I do pick one up? Or should I just keep the J & J? Thanks so much in advance.

I have had many sir and all I can give you is my opinion on them. I like my sniper jump & break. I also have a white diamond tip on it. I love this one because I get a very solid hit and feel from it every time. That is all I look for, is how solid it feels. I dont get any deflection from it that is noticeable. It makes me "feel" strong.

The "Picone White Diamond tip" is not a phenolic tip. Phenolic resins are hard and brittle and although they do make the ball jump as well as break hard, can be difficult to glue and very prone to miscues.

* The "Picone White Diamond tip" reduces miss-cues, to a minimum. Takes and holds chalk very well. * It allows you to put english on the cue ball. You can jump with english, stop the cue ball, even drawing it back.

* When used for the break or jump-cue, gone is the glass breaking sound and fear of miscue.

what works for YOU ?

So my question is....what makes a break cue a good one?

Regardless of the name , or the weight , or the features , or the hype ~ what makes a break cue great is YOUR ability to spread and make balls with it . Experiment with several , and determine what works best for you , not what works best for SVB . . .
My break cue is a big ol' 22 oz monster with a hard leather tip, and it works great for ME , but my 26 year old daughter hates it !
She breaks with an 18oz Sneaky with a LePro tip - and at the 2010 9ball NTC , she made 3 9-on the-breaks in a single match (shooting to 25) . Guess that one works for her ! ;)

she makes Daddy SO damn proud sometimes . . .

A good friend of mine and fellow Azer "johnnyshakes"has an Orange Crusher break cue. I have broke with it many times and absolutely love it. Many of our other friends have used it as well. 100% positive feedback. The taper on the shaft gives it incredible feel. There are a lot of great break cues out there, this is this best I have tried.

I have one also. I had one of Mike's early Sledgehammers for a few years and I like the Orange Crusher better, personally. Note that the OC is NOT a jump/break, just a break cue. All Mike's break cues come with leather tips.
If you can, try one before you buy one. I've tried a friend's J & J several years back and didn't like it. Much prefer the OC, mine is 18.5 oz with a much better, though smaller diameter, taper.

"Shakes" bought it with a playing shaft too, and also uses it as a playing cue.

As my friends on here have mentioned, I bought one from Mike when he ran a special on them, mostly because I liked the way it looked, and I didn't like the McDermott Stinger j/b that I had at the time. Once I got it, I loved it. It has a very long taper, which I like because it allows me to break with a closed bridging and following through comfortably, which the fat McDermott didn't let me do. I also like a hard leather tip because I have a hard time controlling the cue ball with a phenolic tip. I like having my break cue rear weighted because I feel like I get more momentum that way on the forward stroke. I did buy a playing shaft for it from Mike, which ironically cost me more than the cue itself did, with a melamine ferrule and a Kamui black medium tip.because I liked the long taper so much. I feel like the rear weight of the cue helps me get around big tables with slow cloth a little easier. I don't use it on bar tables because it is a little too tough to control the speed of the cue ball when playing, so I just break with it then. It's 18.5 oz, which doesn't seem to take away any power, but it is easier for me to control.

Hope some of this helps you.

Johnny

Thanks for all your input

Hey everyone, just wanted to say thanks for your input. I liked the idea of breaking with a low deflection cue however I'm going with the Orange Crusher. Mike just emailed me my tracking number and it's on the way! I don't know if he's shipped much to Canada but when I asked him to send the cue via USPS he said no problem. I can't wait for people to ask me "WTF is that?" He asked me what weight I wanted and asked what he recommended......so a 20oz coming my way, just hope I'm man enough to swing it! ;)

Better start doing bicep curls to swing that 20 oz breakcue fast.

JK. :)
