HELP-Collar on my Z2 shaft?

Quick question. I recently bought a Z2 BLANK for my Mike Stacey. I was going to send the cue back to Mike Stacey to match collars etc. I really dont want to be without my cue. Been shooting very well!!!! We have a very talented cuemaker (Greg K- Shooters- CT). I was talking to him about tapping the shaft etc. He said what kind of collar would you like. I told him i did not want one. He told me i have to put a collar to protect the joint.

My question is do i really have to put a collar? Cant i just have the shaft tapped and have him put the little finish he needs too? Will it affect anything not having a collar?

I have a Schmelke butt with OB pro+ collarless coming my way in a few weeks. I have been curious about how it will hold up and will be finding out the hard way.

They may insist on a collar if you expect any warranty. I shot with a collarless cue before and it didn't explode. Your mileage may vary.

Collar is recommended, did you ask Greg about matching the collar?

I will not send a cue out of my shop with out a collar.
I have seen a few collar less shafts split at the joint , matter of fact I have one in my shop as I write this that the customer ordered a new shaft from me. because his shaft split at the joint.
I would never make a shaft with wood collars either, and allot of the ivory joints split to if there is not a phenolic or metal sleeve under the ivory ......

Laminated LD shaft I have seen split at the joint too.
 
I don't mind splitting joints once in awhile.

Predator makes the lowest priced Sneaky with a wood to wood joint. You can put them thru their paces, no problem.

But, in the long run, Joint Collars are not just there to be pretty as they do serve a purpose.
 
Joint collars

A joint collar changes the joint from being the weakest part of the shaft to the strongest part of the shaft. Once you are informed of the risk then do what you wish. I have both styles .............in almost everything but I'm not as smart as most people.
