help support my go fund me campaign for pool instruction

This stuff is priceless. First I would like to thank you all , in just 12 short hours you guys have single handedly given me all the material I need to ace not 1 but 2 of my courses this semester.

You see this was a little experiment given to me by my sports psychology professor after a nice long debate we had about billiards and how he claimed it's come a long way since sketchy pool halls and smokey dive bars . That billiards is making its way mainstream and that it's a new breed of people involved in the sport that care about the advancement of the sport and getting new people interested and involved for the health and growth of pool .

Now my argument was that pool is actually regressing back to the shady days of bar room hustling , strong arm guys , and selfish players that only care about themselves, and are afraid to get new blood interested and involved out of fear of teaching someone who potentially could become better than them . And as passionate as I am about the game and sport in general I am ashamed to say that's I'm right . We set up that little go fund me campaign , leaving the info fairly vague as not to influence people one way or another , just to see how the reaction was and the acceptance of it . And without digging into or asking questions people just immediately began bashing it , which is the response I expected , you see I could have easily been some kid that doesn't have much in life just trying scrape up money anyway I could to learn the game , that I seen being played at the bar my mom or dad spends our rent or utility money in . And I heard some guy in my area teaches it . But with the exception of one or 2 people that did question something nobody cared , they just bashed, saying stuff like quit being a bum , quit pan handling , get a job etc . Did I expect any money to be donated no , because as I said before nobody cares about the new guy learning to play cause he might become better than them and take that $20 a rack out of there pocket . Or knock them out of that d level tournament . And as of this post no money has been donated .

Now before every goes crying foul , If I had been proven wrong and the pool community was more generous than thought , any funds that had been donated were actually going to send a kid how has had it rough in life and is very deserving of it to pool school . And since everyone was so adamant about me getting a job and earning the money myself , I do have a job and I am putting up the hard earned money to send this kid .

And as a little side note this same little social experiment was done in different sports genres baseball, basketball, football even soccer and tennis and this is the only one that failed to pony up anything but rude comments and snide remarks :thumbup2:

You have a dozen posts, joined this month, and throw out a "give me money" thread and you're surprised (or not surprised I guess) that it was met with complete skepticism? Go to a bowling, fishing, or probably about ANY other forum with this cute little experiment and I would venture to say it'd be met with the same amount of skepticism. This was an experiment that was set up to fail and it did.

First of all, your self-assessed “I’m right” is, well, wrong.

Your skewed post took away any possible outcome other than what you got in return. Walk into any place and ask for money and you’ll get the same – i.e. Barber Shop – “Hey who wants to pay for me to go to barber school?” What resounding welcome do you expect?

By the way, I don't believe much if any of your post. Least of which "pool" was the only sport not to pony up.

Your typical of today's youth. Baby bird, "Feed me. Feed me."

If this really was a “course”, I hope you’re paying your own money for the class and not using a government aid of any kind – I sure as HE77 don’t want to pay for that type of edyoukayshun.

Also, you want a pool school. Walk into your local pool hall and don't be the person you appear to be in this thread and you would get someone to help you.

In another thread the OP says this:

To the OP, there is nothing wrong with getting formal instruction, and Mark is one of the best instructors in the US.

With that said, the best things in life are the ones that you earn through your own hard work and saving. If you cannot afford it now, save money till you can.

You will be better for it in the long run, instead of asking for handouts.

I agree and I like Mark Wilson, I hit a few balls in his pool room in Illinois before it closed.

Spend your cash on table time. When you save up enough money for lessons the extra experience you get in the meantime will benefit you because the lessons will make more sense.

A lot of us have contributed to what we thought were good causes on this forum.
Silly little experiments like this hurts that generosity...like a professional mooch on the
street makes you question the few bucks you hand out to people in need.
If you're so smart, why didn't you come up with a better scenario?

I would be willing to bet if donations started to happen the OP would have written a slightly different post thanking everyone.

Obvious troll is obvious

Your logic is flawed, as was your experiment.
There were many valid questions posted here, and your gofundme account was extremely vague, including your photo.
Remember you are talking about an industry that has had many a share of frauds and con-men. Google "Kevin trudeau" and invest some time into learning and researching the history of the sport in modern times.

And as for your thread here, maybe you should also invest some more time researching how generous pool players can be.

How about when a Vietnam vet had his cue stolen and this forum raised cash to buy him a new one?

Or more recently, Mike Wong was able to gain funds to enter the US Open on donations and through go fund me. Here is the link:

http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=405575

I realize you are young, so you haven't learned much about life yet, but life is not about absolutes. For you to try to find an absolute with a misleading fund raising request and no photo proof of a young player, only to be met with skepticism and questions-only to decipher it all as pool is seedy, is pretty much a flawed experiment.

I do commend you for being active in trying to conduct research even though it isn't complete and misleading. It would make for great work as a political pollster. When trying to steer results towards a desired conclusion.

I'll bet you a thousand dollars that at least fifty dollars gets donated
Trying to figure out a double dump angle....that would be more believable than the OP'S saver.

How to become a joke in less than 15 posts.

Nice try. Any University professor would understand the success or failure of a gofundme campaign would not be enough to make any reasonable assertions or conclusions of the nature of the cue sport subculture, especially given the relatively small sample size compared to the millions of league players which make up the majority of the players. You even declared it a failure barely 12 hours after posting it (at midnight by the way), allowing only 35 replies. Not to mention the nature of your gofundme was never going illicit a positive response in any subculture. You don't need lessons with a world class instructor to get started.

As for your supposed control groups, are you trying to say that you have been funded for top class instruction in basketball, football, soccer and tennis? Enjoy all those lessons. If these aren't your experiments, then you would need to conduct your own control group.

FYI, there have been plenty of campaigns like this that have been successes, people donating to others that they have not met or heard of. For example, https://www.gofundme.com/zk6gavnk, this lady is getting donations to play in the world championships. That you are new player has no bearing on anything, especially given this forums propensity for giving out tons of free advice to newcomers.

It also should be stated that the OP clearly doesn't understand or play pool. If he/she did, they would know that beginner instruction and training material is offered for free or a small fee anywhere you look. From YouTube, to Amazon books, to training dvds.

It was also pointed out that Mark Wilson had a book and one would logically start there before seeing Mark Wilson for a weekend of lessons.

Pool players support their own and there is a host of young talent that spent time on the table and already soaked up the instruction, so the generosity comes out in full force when they need a leg up to get into a tournament or maybe instruction.

The OP, thinks that one can only start and improve in a sport by going to a world class instructor for lessons on a single weekend. THAT is actually most disturbing and speaks a lot about his/her mindset when approaching a job/goal in life. It's not about hard work and self reliance, it's about how to get the money "needed" to create said goal.

That same mentality allows college institutions to charge $60 K a year for degrees that have 0% job placement in the real world. The students think they spent the money and are now owed the results and spoils of victory.

This thread experiment proves that most of all.

I should do a gofund me for the Main Event next year in poker for $10k or maybe $12-13k for travel/expenses etc. At least with that request there would be a potential on a return if I offer a cut on the profit which I would obviously....hmm

This is obviously a lie. You didn't get into college with this little grasp of the written English language.

I think it is all BS and the OP is trying to get money for nothing after Mike had his expenses for the US open paid. If I am incorrect and this was an experiment.....you need to grow up and understand nothing comes free. The people who have been helped financially on here had proven they were willing to sacrifice and put in effort before asking for help. Not just "I want to learn pool.......gimme gimme gimmie". There are world class experts here who offer guidance for free. Both table mechanics and players. Not only that, the people who deserve support have gotten it.

Maybe you should look at that instead of your terribly delivered request for how the pool community supports each other.

Oh and send us some links to these other requests for money that have been so successful

This. if all the ridiculous 'funds' were taken off gofundme, there'd be nothing left but perhaps true emergencies such as unexpected funeral expenses or maybe a family struggling with medical bills for a sick child. All the other leeches....well, go get a fcking job! The entitlement generation in full bloom!
What's even more funny, some bozo red rep'd me for that post.... Is the world really getting this lazy and entitled?

O That's deep
I felt bad for second, ( really )

If you are going stand on the corner and beg for money then you should really need it and you should of exhausted all other avenues of working for what you get.
And getting donations for pool school isn't what I would consider someone who is in need...

IMAGE OF POOL :rotflmao1:
Personally I don't care what happens to pool, I play pool and I don't care how dark and smoke filled the room is, I don't care if I need to carry a UZI to protect myself.
I am there to play and enjoy the game, I don't care what color peoples skin is or how young or old they are or even what sex they are.
I don't care if they don't speak English or Mexican

You could be some trans gender that just came out of the closet as far as I am concerned, I am there to play pool not swap spit in the shower or hear the woe is me from someone who cant be honest with themselves and would actually ask for donation's so they can get pool lessons
If your that way, I don't want you at my table.
I play pool for fun not to be around phony scammers that cant carry there own weight and cry like some baby when they don't get there way.
