Need help with carbide inserts and tool holder, Been out of cue work for a few years now and just getting back into it, I cant remember the part numbers for the Kennametal carbide inserts and tool holder I use to have. Can any one maybe share what you use and part numbers , or what most guys are using now, MFR part numbers, Where to buy from, Anything will be helpful, Thanks in advance.

I too have been wanting to score some of these inserts as well, but also need a little help on the toolholder itself.

I bought a 5pc set of 1/4 shank toolholders from Harbor Freight and thought they would be ideal for the 7x10 Enco I do all my tip/ferrule/material cutting on,and now my old Cuesmith lathe.

But the truth is every one of them has enough slop in the insert/support wall interface that if you change directions with your cut,you WILL see the cut change because the insert moves.

I've got them as tight as the tiny Torx bit will let me go without stripping the head on them, and you can rock the insert with your thumb.

Anyone got a source for good toolholders in these 1/4 and 3/8 shank that aren't 100.00 a piece?

Also,do they make this same high-rake insert in a DCMT form? Tommy D.

Being a cheap man I would shim them snug.

Hello,

Shars has the 5 piece set that is not very expensive and for the Cuesmith style lathe it is cheap and easy to get some extra toolholders and modify them.

Have not used them - but they look OK

Dale

This is funny.
I pointed you to a link where to get them.
On top of that , I pointed you to the right one with the correct radius so you wouldn't be creating nasty lines when turning pieces.

I bought a set of these and they are too small to hold the inserts this thread is about. Can some one point me to the correct bits to hold these inserts please?

Thanks,

JC

How so? I know a couple people who are using inserts on 3/8 shank holders.

Just like I said, I bought the inserts as shown in this thread and also the bits shown on e bay and the inserts are too big for the bits. Don't know how else to describe it. The triangle is too big for the spot it mounts and the hole is too big for the screw.

Ebay 3/8th

$16.90 for 10 pcs shipped from China. New URL for correct type is $18.40 for 10, total.

Wrong type ordered. Will update later.
OK, these are $15.90 for ten plus $2.50 shipping.

I ordered them and will update once I try them. I do have 4 from High Quality tool, but ordered for 1/2 tool holder. I have those holders on order, so I'll be able to compare. I don't do a lot of tips anymore, so longevity won't be tested.

I suspect what I need is 1/2 inch bits like these instead of the 3/8 that I bought but I'm still not sure. One thing I am sure of, I'm not a machinist or I would already know all this stuff.

I don't know what kind of lathe you are using but the half inch tool holders are to large for the smaller cue makers lathes most on here use. You need 3/8ths or 1/4" tool holders. Right now, with the holders you are trying to use, even if you find an insert that will fit the holder, the tool will be way to high to be of any use.

Try selling those holders here for someone with a larger lathe that they will fit and then get some holders off of e-bay of the proper size being either 3/8" or 1/4". Both 3/8 and 1/4" should fit the inserts you now have.

I bought the 1/2 bit holders I referenced a couple of posts ago and they have no problem fitting in and getting low enough using the quick change tool post and my hightower lathe. They work quite well with the bits this thread is about.

First trial

I received these today and installed one tip. They fit 3/8" holders.

I also bought some 1/2" holders for the tips I bought off of High Quality tools site. The Ebay Koroloy are very sharp and worked well, nice ribbon from the ferrule when facing. I have a TV-54 10 inch Atlas with an AXA quick change and can use the 1/2" tool holders. I prefer the 3/8", it seems sharper. Will post again when tool shows signs of wear, but I don't do a lot of tips anymore, just for my friends.
