Help with Mottey Cue

Now THAT's what I'm talking about! :)

A very kind gesture by a respected member of the community with an established reputation dealing with cues.

It won't transform the cue into a Mottey but it sure relieves you of dealing with the issue and gets you a cue you can auction with a clear conscience and no fuss with refinishes etc.

EDIT: Rep sent your way.

I don't really know what to say. But thank you to all of you. Here is a link to a video I created for my brother, his name was Allen. He actually died in my arms while the paramedics were there. I got to tell him that I loved him just before. We thought he had a few more months, but when he took a step he just collapsed.

Here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fX82CzJqEQM

I will email you the info you requested.

Thank you

Howard

Tell you what I'll do. Send me your regular e-mail, name and address to jvan@classiccues.com. As long as your cue is straight, I will swap the cue out for so you can have the auction. I will send you a cue, and case, of my choosing. I will write a letter for the cue that I send you.

My brother also died of lymphoma at 18 in 1993. I'll take care of the refinish and removing the name so it doesn't get passed along.

Joe

thats why joe you are truely one of the good guys....truely a great thing you are going trying to do......and sorry for both of your lose on family members...

I have the cue and it has some real interesting dimensional characteristics. One feature that should point in the right directional. The joint stitch ring is a 6 stitch pattern, which is strange for a 4 point cue. The shaft inserts were machined with a lead in angle that removes the first thread.

But I will say, dimension for dimension, its really close to a Boti. The joint diameter, the ring thicknesses, the points to the joint, are all identical to my Gus. The wrap is 12.75" lg, a little longer than it should be, the back end dimensions are 3.00 for the ebony and 1 1/2" for the delrin. Delrin is old stock, almost milky / yellowing.

Whomever made this cue, was very familiar with Szam dimensions. I would almost definately say 80's because of the delrin.

Mottey - No
Black
Horn
Jensen
Brianna
Scruggs
Stroud - Never saw a Boti stitch ring on his cue

Interesting....what does the pin look like....also inserts and under the bumper? Think somebody was trying to fake a Szam when this was made?

Personally, I still think it may have come out of the Mottey shop. Just not by James or Paul. I say John Williams. At least I was under the impression that he made some cues out of their shop. I would contact him if not already done. Here is his email address. jcustomcue@aol.com

Pin looks good. Inserts are the right lengths, under the bumper, slightly questionable.

I don't want to say they were faking it, becuase the color scheme is so non-szam. If this cue was black, orange, green and white, then I would say someone was trying very hard to make a Szam.

It is most likely not a Jensen. Mike refinished it for me when I first got it. I think he would have said something. I actually built Mikes his website he used for a while. Surprised it is now down. Paul was actually going to send it to John to refinish.

I am learning a lot on this.

Thanks again

one CLASS dude! nice going joe.

Here is a "buzz" ring. 1/2-5/8 lg with a weep hole. I hope someone recognizes this as their work.

6 block stitch, buzz ring... heavy Szam influence.

BTW with the 13 mm shaft, this cue plays exceptional. The tips are old champions that have lost their moisture content so when you shape them they flake and look like a chia tip till you tap it off. Nice Morri mediums and this cue is going to be a gem.

No doubt it's a good cue. Shame that it had the bogus signature on it...but it's still a good cue.

I am more and more curious about it, especially now that we are sing the structure of it.

I do hope somebody recognizes the work.

When I played it, it did play great, a shame one of the shafts has become a bit out of round. This has indeed been interesting to follow along with, I have learned a lot. Cue should look great when Joe is finished with it.

I received the cue from Joe today. It is a very nice Skip Weston, and a very nice case. I am waiting on a description of the cue so I can post it on eBay. The entire proceeds are going to the Ronald McDonald House here locally in Nashville out of Vanderbilt hospital. I will post a link to it as soon as I have it up, but hopefully by tomorrow evening.

Thanks again to everyone for chiming in with info, and I wish you all well.

I just saw your listing on Ebay and came back to check this thread.

Yes, nice cue, and a worthy cause.

Well today has been a very good day. One of the members on this forum, and I hope they will say who they are at some point, has purchased the cue. Normally, I would not end any auction early, but for 5000 dollars, I did. Yep, I said 5000 dollars. He asked me not to state to much, but I can say that he was touched by all the help on this, and made a lot of kids happy with this.

We made the payment to Ronald McDonald House, and I have attached an image of the receipt, just in case anyone wanted to see it.

Again, I want to thank everyone who helped with this, and give you all a BIG THANK YOU. Especially you Joe.....

Now that right there folks is something awesome. Turning a fake Paul Mottey
cue into a $ 5000 donation to the Ronald McDonald house. I've seen some very
good things happen on this site, and this one to me rates right up there with the
best of them. Even though I had nothing to do with this transaction, today I'm
very proud to be a member of this site. With all the bad things that you hear in
the news nowadays, this was a very nice thing to read this morning. Props to all
that had something to do with this.

Thanks to the buyer...

Classiccues was just happy to help out...

Anyone that has lost a relative or friend to cancer, lymphoma, any disease knows its a long grieving process. I think of my brother often, as does TG I am sure. I watched TG's youtube tribute and it reminded me of my brother who was only 18 when he had passed away.

Because of our age difference we weren't as close as we should have been. But I know had he survived he would have been my fishing partner for life. You never know how long a brother, sister, parent, son, daughter, best friend will be around, so take advantage of the time you have with them.

BTW getting the cue off the market as a Mottey is a bonus. I am sure Paul wouldn't want the cue circulating, as well as any unsuspecting buyer getting jammed with it.
