Here's a post I made in Jay's Thread "Whats wrong W/Pool"

I thought this is a good post, it was on page 4 of jays thread, I relly took my time to make this post, I was hoping more people would see it this way, if you like it please let others here know about it, so here it is:

I agree with you Jay for the most part, its changed some since 85 when i started going to the pool room everyday. i could make a list of the differences i have seen. But i'm certain that they have already been noted in this thread.

I will however mention what I see as the biggest change in pool from 1985 that I have witnessed (insert drum roll) is pool is more social than before. I suppose its because of the internet I have met a lot of my best friends right here. Pool tournments seem more festive now<----that sounds gay, but its true.


I think its because of 3 things first is the longer your in the game the more people you know(like Jay), the internet(message boards (AZB)/streaming(TAR) creates the biggest rail ever in the history, and lastly Phones-25 years ago it was like 75 cents or a $1 for long distance. So if I wanted to call up Shannon Daulton for banking advice it might be $10-$20, now days I can call Shannon for free. That means he will call me more often and I will call him more often. So when I see him at a tournment (Holding Court ) I can go up to him and bust his chops or what ever simply because we now days can all communicate with each other for almost nothing.

When I go to a pool tournment now days compaired to 1987 its much more social and fun, its like a reunion almost. Sure not everyone is friends with each other but it isnt cold like it used to be, back then we had fun too. But now when I go to a pool tournemnt now I see people I know not a 1000 familiar faces, Now days I know who alot of people and who they are, their name etc. But back in 1987 i would just see alot of people but never talked to them-just faces in the pool room. I didnt know where anyone lived, I didnt have their phone number-but I knew I would see them at tournemnts or in the pool room everyday for years-yet never knew their name's.


i have good insight in this because I dropped out of pool for about 11-12years, I just played at home to keep instroke, but I had other interests and completely ignored pool, That gap of time made the contrast of pool now vs 20 years ago super clear to me.


It would be great if pool got traction and became a huge sport with the pros making millions. Thats my goal, When I got back into pool and saw the social changes I liked that alot. I said "I want to give pool a shot in the arm" right here on AZ-then like a year later I lost 95% of my income, So I cant do what I will do when I'm making $$$ again. I want to set up a bank account with a pre-determind amount of $$$, outline what that $$ will be spent on, a business plan. Then present it to the world and let nature take its course. Soon as I have a steady income and restored my losses of this past 2 years, i'm putting pool into business. Actually The fact i'm not able to do it know is good, within 2-3 years I should be able to create the biz plan, write the misson statment and propely fund it-with open book accounting to all the players at their request. I will be the right age, and at a point in my personal life to make this happen. I give everyone my word on that. Love me or hate me I'm going to do the best for pool I can do adding $$$ is the strongest move-thats what i'm all about.


There has been 3 tragic deaths in our pool family in the last couple months, I never felt so much grief and emotion like that years ago because I just didnt know the people in our pool world as well. So now the losses are closer to me and I think alot of others too.

Well I dunno what to say but I like it. It sounds like the atmosphere at the pool hall is warmer now since we're all connected. I know it's cool doing a live streaming tournament where chatters can comment and woof. "Hey, this guy in jersey says he'll play you a set".

Good luck with whatever your shot in the arm turns out to be. Anyone who is willing to invest real money in pool deserves our thanks.

Thanks, until I post $$$ I havent accomplised anything, its just hot air. When the time is right(and I believe the time will be right sooner than later) I am going to make things happen. Look at the M-Cup how strong is that?? Why cant there be more of those? Team events on a international scale. Like proper football NOT NFL, proper football is huge world wide, I think that looking at America as the solution to pool is very short sided.

I think international team events may be the way foward, it's. Massive audiences, players getting paid. Set up a farm system in American for our boys and girls. Have 15-20 pro tour stops in america every year. Have perfect audio/video to broadcast into as many markets as possible. Then you got something advertizers, make the champions heros, they are now I see it when I'm around the tournemnts. When all that happens then the magic starts to happen-advertizing contracts with merchants in the billiards biz and any other thing you can think of look at NASCAR. they have more sponsers than can fit on the car.

Round robin tournments giving equaal TV time to all contastants, why? because if Nike wants to put their logo on JA and Ben and Jerry's wants to put their logo on my shirt too, one advertizers is getting their $$$. I'm being serious here, if I was out there with my B&J shirt on for all 20 torunments this year and I win one match, B&J got screwed because i cant compete on that level. forget about what the players want(just for a second-they are the most important people here)-we know its money and were gonna take care of them first, ok in order for us to get the players their $$$, after pool has traction the game has to display everyones adds evenly, Nike gets a great deal back when Tiger is playing. Or in my example Nike would do good with him, problem is all the other advertizers dont get equal air time???? The M-Cup is organized in a way that every player gets almost equail air time, thats not a accident. It dosent matter what cue sport the pros are playing as long as there is a payday for them, in order to insure that After I blow a million bucks I should have enough going on that we can attract advertizers. Look at the poker players they have more patches,hats etc than ever before. Pool could do the same. Nascar insures that the advitersire get good value and equal time. Has anyone seen this in pool in America? Im not being a smart ass, i wasnt around for 10 years.


But until I'm back in biz I cant risk anything here, Even if I broke even or lost a managable amount every year so what? I'd be putting $$$ into pool players pockets not mine. If It got to the point that I could take $$ for myself I'd rather expand the whole international thing.

Clear. Simple. Straight-forward. And most important.. FROM THE HEART. Keep that dream alive. Visualize it daily. See it. You have the skills and the heart to make it happen if you "see it" every day.

This web-site has made a close community out of a group of people from every race, religion and country. That's what life is supposed to be about.... people careing about each other and adding to the quality of each others life.

I hadn't thought about it , but pool is a friendlier place than in the 80s. I quit playing around 84 and just started up last year. Good post and good luck to you!!!

Wealth can be relative I chase the dollars like everyone else, but it sounds like you're already a rich man if something gives you that much enjoyment.

As a fan I want pro pool to do well so I can enjoy the highest level of play.

This is what I want to do, However until I catch a break in biz its like I said "Hot air" But its wise to have a goal in life, i awalys set goals for many things, and most I have achieved. If I didnt set goals I wouldnt have any drive, I'd be lazy. I really hope I can do this. One thing is for sure I'm not going to step on other peoples dates bacause it costs players a payday, There is room enough for alot more events I dont want any enimies, my first priority is to make sure the players are paid, second is to make sure i dont step on other promoters dates. I will cooperate with them-not go to war, as we have seen before.


The thing is i'm going to do this because I want to not for a payday, If It never happenns, then it just didnt happen, But I am very interested in it and have been for a while. Thats why I promote the "Fatboy" name, not for attention but rather a brand within pool.

Eric, I like and respect how you laid out your idea. The path that you envision is one that can be called a Model. This Model has,that I can see,included a number of areas that provide stimulus to developing pool. You stated you have been away from pool for a time. I see that as a good thing. It gives you a perspective from looking at different models of business,finance,sport,and so on. The reason pool hasn't developed is that pool players have always tried to do it themselves. It takes people of various skills to piece together such an enormous undertaking. There must be a clear and concise vision for What (We) are building. We must have a clear Goal for what we are building. We must have clear and reasonable rewards for what we are building. We must be able to remember that we work as emmisaries for pool at every opportunity we have when speaking to strangers. I posted recently that pool has many supporters who have never picked up a cue. Pool players and their families buy millions of items everyday. We cannot be negligent in assuming anything,no matter how large or small,when we work toward that goal. Money is a major part of the process,but it is not the goal. The Goal is to build a Model that any person who wishes to participate in pool may do so from the earliest years until they are no longer physically able to do so. I like professional pool,and I like TV,but neither of them will make pool the success it is capable of being. They have large roles to play,and bring benefit,but are at this point in time merely an oddity that ESPN uses to attract players to watch as an alternative to a major sports event on another channel. I've run a bit long on this post,and have much more to exchange with you,and others of course. Till then,keep thinking,dreaming,and working. If I can be of any help,please feel free to ask.

Looking forward to it

A few years back, Kevin Trudeau came along and promoted pool tournaments with really big payouts. You remember the IPT, right? At that time, I thought to myself, Wow, here's a billionaire who happens to be a pool nut and he is going to radically alter the pool world in terms of the size of tournaments and the public interest in the game. I thought Trudeau was so in love with the game that he would be willing to lose a few million here and there just to promote pool. I was wrong. Trudeau thought he would be able to make money from the IPT through various means and when he saw that he wasn't making money and that it didn't look like he ever would with the approach he had taken, he backed away from his involvement in the game.

Now with Fatboy, we KNOW he truly loves the game and the players. So if and when he is back in the big $$$, I have no doubt he will inject some serious cash into the pool world, and hopefully in ways that promote the sport overall and public interest in the game.

I like your insight on the pool world and your vision for the future. I wish you the best and I hope things turn in your business so you can make things happen for the pool players. Lord knows they need all the help they can get.

I hope to see you at the US Open this year. I've missed getting to meet you at the tournament and maybe we can cross paths this year.

I think status quo is BS. Anything that you can do to help promote pool will be supported by myslef. Pool is far from dead. Just look at the AMATEUR leagues and tourneys. Pool is probably is more of a participatory sport than a spectator sport, unless it is a special event of some kind. I think the idea of having amateur events in conjunction with pro events helps, but then the sport is asking the same people over and over to support it. Hope you win..
