"Hey that guy is good"

So I am playing in my BCA league tonight and there is a guy just playing by himself in the corner. He is throwing all 15 balls on the table and just making shots.

Cool.

In between shots of my matches I watch him a little and I think, "you know he can play a little, a lot of shots are going in"

So I mention to my friend, "hey that guy is good"

I know a lot of the good players in San Diego and I don't really recognize the guy.

I am just starting to think he may be a pretty decent player.

So I am watching from time to time and he is still just throwing all 15 balls on the table and making shots. Not the greatest way to practice I think but whatever. But then I notice him hit a couple shots in rotation, and I realize "oh he's actually playing rotation"

So when he clears all the balls I am thinking wow, this guy is pretty strong. Wonder who he is.

About that time he finishes up his rotation practice and does some drills, and they are pretty impressive, so I realize he is a very very high level A player or pro but I don't recognize him.

He leaves and I go to the bathroom, and in the bathroom is a big framed picture of Dennis Orcollo..... of, OH!!....I think "hey that guy was really really good".

Just a little fun thing I thought i'd share.

The team we played was missing a player and their captain also having no idea who he was thought of asking him to sub :)

Dennis is in the Bay area currently. Maybe there's two of him!

Not sure..maybe it wasnt, but it looked exactly like him and Dennis was the only pro they have pictures of so I assumed he went there from time to time or had some relationship with them.

I just looked at a bunch of pictures of him and I am fairly certain it was him. This guy was definitely really really strong and looked just like the pictures.

U sure it wasn't Castro?

Victor? Positive. Never saw this guy before and he looked exactly like Orcollo. Maybe just a really really good local player that just looks like him, but like I said they had Orcollo pictures in a few places, and no other pros that I noticed.

Do you work for CNN news? lol

Just thought it might be an interesting anecdote, but looks like maybe I saw someone that was really really good but NOT Dennis Orcollo which makes the story really boring.

Maybe you found one of those unknown monster players that were going to go around and spot Shane the 7 ball for 50,000 or something. Don't remember the post and I think the guy that started it got banned, but it was a fun read.

Dennis is in CA but he has been playing in the 10 ball and now the 1 pocket events, is not likely to be in another room fairly far away during them.

Not saying you in particular. But you did say you didn't know it was him until you saw a picture of him.
So it turns out it wasn't him anyway.
But I can't stand how so many people who play pool. Love pool.
Consider themselves real "players" and so on,
wouldn't know SVB, Earl or Efren etc... if they walked right by them.
Just a pet peeve. Sorry.
No casual football fan would miss Tom Brady passing through.
Weekend golfers would surely know Tiger. Etc......
Sucks for Pro pool. Sorry to sidetrack your thread.

I do not agree with that. I am not a fan of Brady and I think he could probably walk up and talk to me and there is a pretty good chance I would not recognize him. I had a couple of our local newscasters walk in the shop as customers and if they did not say their name I dont think I would realize it was them even though I see them on TV everyday. A lot has to do with the setting in which you see them, you recognize football players when you go to a game but if you see them at McDonald's there is a pretty good chance you wont notice them for who they are. I had Ernie Irvan of NASCAR fame standing next to me at the race track but he was not there to race, he was just spectating and drinking beer and hanging out. He was there for a good 20 minutes before I even recognized him because I did not expect to see him, it was not the kind of racing he was involved in.

I would recognize most pro players, certainly Efren and Earl and Shane and Rodney and SVB, and Mika and many just short of pro level, but I was away from pool for a while and don't know everyone.

But, yes, there is no real mechanism for recognition of the current players. It needs to become a regular thing on TV again somehow to generate interest. I sometimes think that a US Snooker Tour might be the vehicle, but maybe it's just too European but it is clearly the best game for TV because of its structure.

Maybe we need to do a kickstarter with Tom Cruise to do a sequel to Color of Money to get it popular again.

True. Been debated on here many times.
Let T. Cruise fund it himself! Lol

This information is worth TONS!

First. If Hard Times is having a player's auction. You make sure you snag them in the player's auction. Boom!

They are unknowns. They won't go for nothing. And they won't bid high against you trying to snag themselves because then everybody in the room will raise their eyebrows.

And side action. You could easily make like 20-30 grand in side action if you play your cards right.

Actually the sky is the limit here. You might do much better than that even.

Let's get that bid up!

Oh, this is gold.

Gold, Jerry. Gold.
