"Hey, where's your break cue?"

I don't mind letting someone I know use my break cue, but I'm damn watchful of what they do with it after they break.

I learned the hard way...now I simply don't loan my personal cues. And believe me I get asked a lot. People are always "hey Varney let me try out one of your break cues"...."sorry but the only one I have is MINE".:)

No offense Mr. Varney, but if I asked you to try one of your break cues or other wise and you said no.. I'd really struggle with ever buying one off of you.

As a cuemakerYou should always have something on hand for potential customers to try.

My J&J J/B is used be everyone, well, it was, until teammates decided they needed one on other nights (when I wasn't playing)....2 teammates decided to buy their own after using mine.

For $50....who cares? Hard to hurt one of those suckers anyway.

I understand your thoughts and you are somewhat correct but you have to consider the other side. If I'm in the pool room matching up or playing in a tourney then its a bit distracting. It'd be different if I was set up as a vendor. Earlier in my career I'd carry an extra j/b...and someone would always make me an offer & I'd sell it. Couldn't hardly keep an extra one on hand. Even sold my personal one so many times you can't imagine. Hard to say no when they start stacking up cash. Same with my playing cue, everyone seems to want the cuemakers personal cues. I guess feeling they are getting the best of the best. I honestly used to make my j/b as ugly as possible so no one would want it...didn't work, they bought those too. I finally made a rule that I would not sell my personal cues unless I had a replacement ready. Finally, now that I've played with the same cue for 2 yrs, my game has picked up a bit. You have to consider now too that I have quite a waiting list. Its not fair to the customers who are waiting patiently for me to sell one to someone on the spot. How would you feel if you've been waiting several months yet your buddy bought one instantly because he bumped into me.
Its a fine line...I try to be fair as possible. Hope you understand a bit better now.:)

Gregg,

you should have said this back to said guy " I dont know, why? where is your break cue? "

I have a couple buddies I travel with to pool tournaments and both of them are free to use my stuff anytime. While, all of us are trying to win a tournament, I also want them to win too.

Nobody wants to use my cues. My playing cue is like really light, so they wouldn't like it. My break cue is extreem light and extreem forward balanced. Don't think there are much peoples who like to use mine :D.

why the hell would u spend money to buy a cue specifically to loan to other ppl? thats pretty dumb.

For the same reason I have a set of cheap tools as "loaners", while the snap-on stuff stays in my locked rollaway...;) Seriously, when we have friends visit, we all wish to bang some balls, I have "loaners"...I see nothing wrong with that...

I call those, "housecues".

Yep...only 2 piece in soft cases. "Hey, want to go play pool? I have a cue I'll loan you."

Why loan a cue if the poolroom got like 30 of them?

"careless bastards" at the airport too

I don't blame you Gregg, there's too many careless bastards that have absolutely no respect for other people's property. I was raised to take better care of other people's stuff than if it were my own. Don't you hate it when someone wanders in on tournament or league night and does the "hey, anybody got a cue I can borrow"

I had my cues in my hard case inside my luggage & found them banged up with a note from TSA acknowledging that they had searched my luggage.

I find it amazing that guys who would never think of borrowing your playing cue don't hesitate to ask for you J/B. Then they insist on doing their best impression of a Johnny Archer leg-in-the-air, shaft-bending break just to see if it's really better than a wallabushka. Now that I have a case that will handle my cues butt-down, I just store both in the case next to my chair. Leaning it against the wall by the house cues is just an open invitation for some people.

Loaners, taking your advice

Suggestion...buy a cheap imported cue as a "loaner"...;)

A few years ago, I loaned a brand new Predator to a friend, and got it back with the entire forearm and butt sleeve chipped, dinged, and scratched. I forgot he was an idiot, and no longer loan out cues. Against my better judgment, I have been letting another friend borrow one of my Ernie Martinez cues during league, and the other night I gave him a very nice Madison Bob sneaky instead, and he got a little testy about it. Next week, I am taking your advice, and I am going to give him an imported cue to keep.

I hear the "hey where's your break cue" all the time

key word my break cue

I just got done fixing another players jump cue. All because he lent it out. Inever let any of the boys use break cue or playing cues! Its all about the lanolin-where has that guys hands been? Some guys hands sweat some don't. Especially when they go what kind of tip is that-do you have to chalk phenolics. Ever see anyone go hey Tiger can I borrow your putter. I like howie Mandels handshake- all knuckles(fists) mark

You guys ever see the guy with the $15 playing cue AND a break cue? I usually ask them why they have two cues and they say they don't want to damage their "nice" one by breaking with it. Always makes me smile. Even if they break it they can probably just screw another tip on right there!
