What about Kevin Federline????????????

You guys are pretty funny.

How much time do you spend on the mohawk? And what all goes into creating this magnificint artwork that results?

Well Dea, believe it or not, the mohawk does not take that much time. Maybe about 15 minutes or so. Thanks for calling it artwork. Generally I get, "what the hell?" or "what was she thinking?"

F8it...Landshark always gets props. She looks out for me and tries hard to get me hooked up and married off.

I just wanna be Sarah's back-up dancer

Mike, I don't know if I should be flattered by that or extremely scared. Unfortunately, right now, I am not in need of back-up dancers. Maybe when I learn how to shake it...I will need some back-up dancers.

Sarah

Hey, I have a question too! It's a hard one, but I think Sarah can answer it.
Well, it is a too part question...but still you might be able to figure it out...maybe...if not those folks at that pool hall you hang at certainly can.

This Country music singer sings about another country music singer in a song that contains these lyrics:

"...well she might’ve took my car keys, but she forgot about my old John Deere."

Who are the two Country music singers???

Oh, NO GOOGLE!!!!

Wow, since when did I become a country music genius. You gave one of them away because of the pool room I hang out in. Their favorite is George Jones....so that has to be one of them. I'm still working on the other one though.

But, I'm just coolies like that. :D
Well, with the  back up dancer volunteers :( you are getting...maybe you need to learn to do it Mariah Carey style, and shake them off instead. lol. :D

Hi Sarah!

Didn't know you were a music trivia expert!!! I don't have a music question but I do some more pool related ones tho!

1.) Who was your 1st instructor (no names necessary) and what did he/she stress or structure for you to practice during your development?

2.) How do you handle the "high speed wobbles" in tournaments when the pressure is really on, and you're so nervous your cue feels like a 50lb bar bel?l!! Going to the bar and getting a stiff one doesn't count!!!

3.) Has gambling made any difference in your tournament play/ability/concentration, and what is your opinion on gambling vs. not gambling @ all and becoming a great player?!

4.) Did you like the Banana Phone song? :D I still can't get it outta' my head!!!

I was reading the general forums on the Best Pro Advice and I was laughing when I saw a poster quoting you on not using english on "whitey" when 1st learning!!! A dear friend of mine who 1st introduced me to pool (on the bar box) said something I'll never forget. It goes somethin' like this: "O.K. lets get something clear... you never, ever need or want to use center ball because you will use english on all your shots anyway. All you have to do is "throw" everything in and the game is easy!!! Oh BROTHER!!!

It was a blessing and curse he showed and taught me the game, but going back and trying to learn something so simple as this has been terribly difficult! :( To this day I still have probs hittin center to center. I still tease my friend about this INSANE advice and never let him live it down, however if it weren't for him I would've never considered picking up a cue stick!!!

Oh.. I'm going to post a quote of advice you were kind to share with me! i'm doing it right now!!! Thanks again!!! :D Keep hittin' the back of dem pockets!!!! :)

Hello Sarah,
Since you seem to be on the spot for answering questions, I got a couple for you. Just curious about the pool room you frequent. Is it a pool hall/bar? What do you like the most about it? How many tables do they have? Are they all 4 1/2x9 or do they have 3-c & snooker tables as well? Is there a lot of action goin on? Doubt that I'd ever make it anywhere near your area, I'm mostly just curious about what makes a good/great pool hall, in your opinion?
sodapopd

Hey Soda,

The pool room that I frequent is called The Billiard Bullpen. It is in Collinsville, IL. It is owned by the instructor Mark Wilson. It is strictly a pool room and a very serious one at that. They only have 4 tables, one bar box and three 9fts. The thing that I like most is that there are all serious pool players there. They don't all play great, but everyone is trying really hard to learn. Everyone takes the game seriously and respects everything and everyone. I think respect for the game and players make for a good pool room. Also, owners that care about the customers always helps too.

1.) Who was your 1st instructor (no names necessary) and what did he/she stress or structure for you to practice during your development?

My first instructor was Mark Wilson. The thing that was stressed the most was proper fundamentals. That is something consistant in your game and you can always go back to the fundamentals to get back on track.

2.) How do you handle the "high speed wobbles" in tournaments when the pressure is really on, and you're so nervous your cue feels like a 50lb bar bel?l!! Going to the bar and getting a stiff one doesn't count!!!

Well going to the bar to get a stiff one really isn't my style so I guess that option is out. I would be lying if I said that I don't get nervous because I do get very nervous. Sometimes I handle it well and other times I don't. Usually deep breathing helps a little bit. Other times, just try to grin and bear it. Bear down and try to make the shot and keep things under control.

3.) Has gambling made any difference in your tournament play/ability/concentration, and what is your opinion on gambling vs. not gambling @ all and becoming a great player?!

To be honest, yes, gambling has made a difference in my game. It helped me when playing under pressure. I think it is a personal choice whether you gamble or not. It is not for everyone. I'm not a great player yet, but with practice and competition I will get there.

As for your friend, everyone has different styles. Some people like using alot of english on every shot and others do not. You can't only use centerball but it helps to be able to hit center ball. Some people naturally put a little bit of spin on the ball.

Thx Sarah! Thx too for being so giving of yourself and your time!!! I appreciate it and benefitted from your help more than you can know!!! You are a GREAT asset to this site and hope you will continue sharing your wisdom as generously as you do!!! Well... that is until you become #1, get all those endorsement deals!!! :D

O.k. 'nuff compliments!!! That Billiard Bullpen seems a bit small for me to fade (deal with)! A lot of serious players in a room with only 4 tables total?!!! That would get me so self-conscious I'd get a hitch in my stroke!!! We don't really have anything like this in my area.. it'd be great just to watch the pros practice or match-up!!! Maybe get in a few practice "beatings" from them too!!!

Mark Wilson?!!!...MARK WILSON?!!!...MARK WILSON?!!! YOOOU lucky daughter of a Pup!!! He's fantastic! I had the privilege of hearing his commentary on some Accu Stats tapes from the 90's. I didn't know who he was them, but he really knew his stuff!!! I was immensely impressed! I enjoyed the way he articulated and explained things (much like you!)! A nice sense of humor too! I've read he is a wondeful instructor...everyone loving his teaching style and comforting, assuring manner. No wonder your mechanics looked so good on that newsreel footage! You really do have top shelf fundamentals!!! Seriously, you made a smart move working with him! DERRR!!! Yah' darn natural!!!

Oh, the point I was making 'bout my friend teaching me the game is.. I never learned how to hit center cue ball!!! So... after I read some books and got some lessons I was like... Oh NO I've got a serious issues!!! You made me feel much better tho' saying you're not perfect (I don't believe it) and some players have the natural tendency to hit off center! I still don't like it and continue to correct it!!! My friend regrets this now but he meant well by it.

Probem is.. I'm a total perfectionist "constantly" trying to improve my mechanics. This hitting center ball w/o side spin stuff almost drives me nuts at times! FRUSTRATING!!! Uh.... do yah' think you can you suggest something I can do to possibly correct this? I've tried most everything from the stroking the cue ball up and down center of the table drill, practicing short straight shots, checking my body/arm alignment and sighting line...I think you get the picture. Taking 2 weeks of and quitting isn't what I had in mind. ;)

Didn't figure you were drinker (re: high speed wobbles)! This game has driven so many to it tho'! I've thought about getting a crutch but I respect the game too much, as well as my opponents (most of them!). I used your advice last night about breathing (I'm used to "holding" my breath!) and "staying in control" of the situation (KEY!!!). I won a lot of games as a result!!! The check's in the mail! ;)

I've thought a lot 'bout gambling against better or great players just for the fun, experience and seasoning. It's a different dynamic by far doing it - as you do - to survive or pay expenses. From your perspective it's more like: A Job and an Adventure!!! Lol!!! Don't worry.. you're well on your way to getting there... Keep believing no matter what and it WILL come!!!

Thx for the answers and opinons!

This - AGAIN!!! - has been awfully long! Sorry! 'Till next time (I hope!) Take good care of yourself Sarah!!! Yah' darn natural!!! ;)

F8it,

Thanks for giving me something to respond to. It has been a little dead lately since there aren't any tournaments going on or anything. Everything is going great, thank you for your concern.

Thank you for your kind words and comparison to two champions. I hope to be as great as Allison and Mike Sigel one day. We have a tournament in California every year. I'm not sure if you are close to the San Diego area, but that is where it is held.

I try to be very approachable so definitely be sure to say hello. There is no reason to be shy. I am just a normal person....even though I think some people will beg to differ on that one. :)

If you have any questions definitely be sure to ask. I try to respond quickly and honestly no matter what the question.

Thanks again,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,
First time i've seen you in here. I don't visit that often either. I'm a very good friend of Mings. We shared a home in LA for a couple of years. I met you briefly in San Diego. I was sitting upstairs chatting with Monica and a couple other gals. We were watching Helena play (I wrote about that event for BD).
I'll never forget the first time I saw you with that BIG hair. I thought who is
that? But you're the real deal, you can play a little. I used to spar with Ming for hours to get her ready for the tournaments. We'd play races to nine, like on tour. And maybe play five or six in a row. That's a lot of pool. At the beginning I would pound her (I used to play the 7 under the top guys), but eventually she got to where she could win sets from me.
Thanks to the WPBA the state of women's pool is the best it's ever been. And the young players (you included) are really quite good. The level of competition is very high and you young guns are pushing the veterans to play better.
Maybe one day we'll play a set ot two. Or I might hook you up with Tang and Dave for some racking practice.
Take care,

Hi Jay,

Thanks for saying hello. I remember talking to you in SD. Ming is also one of my good friends. I hope she starts playing regularly again soon. Thanks for thinking I can play a little. That wasn't the best tournament of my life. Hopefully my game will step up a notch here soon.

I agree with you, the WPBA is helping not only the state of women's pool, but pool as a whole. The sport is going places and it is up to the younger generation to keep it moving in the right direction. I think the competition is getting stronger which always helps. Hopefully I can stay part of the crowd that gets stronger.

I wish I could make it to California to get the opportunity to be the racker for Tang and Dave. I have only been to San Diego for the WPBA tournament.

Take care,
Sarah

Thank you again. I hope to be able to keep answering questions for a long time in the future. Ranking doesn't matter. I wouldn't be where I am without the supportive people I have met in person and on this forum and I wouldn't give it up for anything.

I believe I worded it wrong when I said there were a bunch of champions in one small place. Yes, there are good players but what I meant was that everyone is serious about the game. There are beginners to pros and everyone is wanting to learn and get better...they aren't just ball bangers there to pass time. It is definitely a change of pace.

Mark Wilson?!!!...MARK WILSON?!!!...MARK WILSON?!!!

Yes, Mark Wilson. I definitely have to say that if you are considering lessons, he is the one to go to. I am fortunate enough to work with him every day. You can't find a nicer person and better teacher.

Probem is.. I'm a total perfectionist "constantly" trying to improve my mechanics. This hitting center ball w/o side spin stuff almost drives me nuts at times! FRUSTRATING!!! Uh.... do yah' think you can you suggest something I can do to possibly correct this?

I too am a perfectionist. Believe me, it usually gets the best of me. I am starting to learn that you can't do everything perfectly and that everyone has their flaws....without those flaws, we wouldn't be ourselves. As for something to correct it...have someone that knows what is going on watch you. That person, since they know about pool can watch and see when exactly you are turning or if your stance is wrong. Once you know, work hard to correct it. Sometimes people figure out the problem but it feels awkward to correct it so they ease back into their old ways.

I used your advice last night about breathing (I'm used to "holding" my breath!) and "staying in control" of the situation (KEY!!!). I won a lot of games as a result!!! The check's in the mail!

Sorry, I accept cash only. :) Honestly, deep breathing is really what helps when it comes to almost anything in life. A friend of mine pointed out to me a few months ago that I tense up when things get tough and it was obvious that I was holding my breath. That made me realize that I need to settle down and not stress things so much (a constant battle for me).

I've thought a lot 'bout gambling against better or great players just for the fun, experience and seasoning.

I went a very long time without gambling. I would only play in tournaments. Once I started gambling, my game did jump. I am not saying that gambling is the answer for everyone, because it isn't. We all have different beliefs, values, whatnot. In my opinion, playing a better player cheap sets is good practice. It can even be betting dinner at a nice restraunt or a movie or something that makes you bear down and play hard.

Sodapop-man,
I'll take the liberty of posting a link to a thread describing the Billiards Bullpen where Sarah has been observed on occasion.

http://www.azbilliards.com/vbulletin/upload/showthread.php?t=15750

It would be impossible to overstate the committment that Mark has to providing a top flight experience for serious players, and the committment that he has to developing proper skills and etiquette in the newer players. Anyone misbehaving or abusing the equipment will be asked to leave.
