High gloss finish over oil rubbed finish

I have a cue with an oil rubbed finish and it is too slick for my taste. Would there be any issues with spraying on a high gloss finish?

I was told this could be a problem.

Thanks!

So wouldn't a good sanding open it up? Or does the oil penetrate so deep that you would have to sand off a very deep layer?

The penetration is significant and scuff sanding won't remove it. You'll be left with a finish that will peel soon enough. You'd need to strip off the oil, rinse, sand and finish.

According to Watco, and a cabinetmaker/woodworker I know, you can apply a finish over their oil stain, but you have to wait at least 3 days after application of the stain. Obviously, it isn't the same as an oil finish, but I thought it might prove useful.

I have sprayed lacquer over an oil finish many times and have never had any problems. I just sand with 320 and spray a light first coat, sand again lightly with 320 and spray.

What kind of oil did they use? If they used tung oil, which is what I use, you will be just fine. With a cleaning and light sanding.
