Hire A Woman

Being that the WPBA has been around for over 20 years and pays by far the largest purses, why don't the men get together and hire a few of their past board members to lead them in the right direction? If this means a woman on top, so be it. . Johnnyt

Perhaps those past board members find the female players a little bit easier to work with?

I personally don't think it matters if a man or a woman runs any mens "tour". The reasons most people I know don't want to watch mens events are that 1-nine ball just looks too easy when the top guys play it(not trying to be sexist, this really is the sentiment from people around here), and tv would never go to ten ball.2-(this one might sound even worse, but it has been well documented on this site) that the women are more physically appealing to most viewers. I am not saying that this should be the case, but it is. And 3- most tournament pool is just plain BORING. oh well, jmo

beautiful women with talent are always going to be more popular than men.

I've personally advocated this for a while, on the basis that if they copy a known quantity like the WPBA that has had demonstrable success over a long period of time they ought to be able to duplicate that success.

The key questions are whether the male Pro players would be willing to work under such conditions and whether WPBA would actually want to work with the male Pro players. It may well be that the women just don't want either the competition (for air time, audience and locations) or the potential aggravation.

Then why are the men more popular in every other sport of which I can think? Only in pool do you see the women on TV more than the men.

Look at tennis and golf. Some of those women are HOT, yet they don't pull the ratings the men pull.

Why is pool the odd ball?

The WPBA works so well because it's run by a board that is made up of it's own members...not by a company that is just trying to make money.

I don't think it matters whether a man or a woman is running a tour. I've served on many boards or planning committees for sporting events or regional and national conference planning and the one thing that all successful organizations have in common is a good business plan that involves smart strategic partnerships. The WPBA does a great job of this. There's a reason they have more television exposure in the U.S. than the men's and it isn't just because women are more appealing to watch.

I spoke to Scott Frost the other day about pool and tours, mentioned about the WPBA running a mens tour and how much better ran it would be and he agreed.I just think that they do a great job with their tour and hope they continue to have success and grow. The men might never have a successful pro tour in any of our lifetimes.

How about we get efren, SVG and archer to dress up like women and play on tv? The best of both worlds.

I don't want to see Efren in a dress... what kind of freak are you? Don't answer that...:D

I was once told by Fran Crimi, that years ago when she was president of the WPBA they met with the then, PBT (Pro Billiards Tour), to see if they might do well to partner up and work together. The first thing they asked her.... was to make coffee! She knew then in there it would never work.

The men can not put together a tour because they only think about their own short sighted gain, instead of what is good for the sport in the long run. Until they find a group among them, willing to step up to the plate and as Christina suggested, put together a firm business plan, hell any plan, it just won't happen. IMO, they are all waiting for someone to do it for them, like KT or CW. The problem with that, is it becomes about that person making a profit, at the expense of the sport and it's players.

I always contended people never watched golf they watched arnie or jack or Phil or Tiger. Nobody, except true golfers, cared about the sport. Most people just want to root for someone or against someone. The problem with Pool is the players are no names and nobody cares if some no name wins 12k if they make the 9 ball. They only way to build up pool is for a lot of upfront money to be spent to create heroes or villians.

Yes the avid pool fan would watch because the game itself is amazing to them, but to the fringe fan they need to root for or against someone. How many people watch the masters, and can't hit a golf ball or even know what Par is, because they need to see if Tiger wins or loses. Since pool has no footprint in americian sports it is almost impossible to have poolplayers be everyday names.

The new organization would need to build a business plan which included making the players household names. This obviously would cost a ton of money and the players would have to understand they are building towards something and they may not be the group of players that utlimately receive the big payouts - it may be the next generation.

When the sport itself has no telvision appeal you need to make sure the players provide the appeal. This means tournaments with tons of cameras, just like golf going from table to table showing just the best shots and telling stories about the players and their families, player profiles, heart wrenching stories. Basically all the BS you see today when you watch a big golf tourney. If it worked then the big name sponsors would catch on and off they would go.

It can be done, but it would be awfully hard to nearly impossible.

Cuechick is absolutley right. The best players do not understand business at all. All they want is whats best for them (individually). They always think somebody owes them something since they play so good.
