Hitting the table with your palm while the balls are moving

During a match today I hit a poor shot, and in frustration I slapped the table. My opponent thought this might be a foul since it could slow the balls down. I think I might agree with him.

Opinions? Bob Jewett?

OMG. See what you started, Boyd?

I think I did this a long time ago when I was first starting out in one of our straight pool leagues. Somebody told me I can't do that because it might change the path of the ball.

So I quit doing it. Now I just cuss instead.;)

I hereby swear to follow your saintly example

Well, I hate for this to go on & on but I just want you to know that I disagree about your floor comment.

Mike your table sets on concrete. Not all do.I once gambled with a guy , at his place, tablemoved ! We were playing 1 pkt I was giving 9/7. After I watched him " run" around the table to affect the roll, I offered 10 / 6 . Stipulation was he had to stay and watch the balls roll.4 games/4 losses later he quit. He really wasnt aware of his behaviour until I pointed it out to him!

Yes Jack, I do understand under certain circumstances that can happen. I played a guy once who had his table up stairs on his second level in his house. Wood floor, I think the floor was giving as one walked around it. Over all, if that does happen, it is a very small % due to what type of flooring the table is sitting on.... Also, what type of table.... I am sure that could happened to a table that is not built as solid & well built as a Gold, Crown, Centennial, Anniversary or a Diamond...... Buildings for pool rooms now a days have concrete floors. They are built not to give when walking around.

I think both sides are correct.

1) can the small vibrations created when walking around the table, be measured by scientific equipment ? YES

2) can the small vibrations above be felt by a human, or move a pool ball ?

NO (unless the pool table is very cheap or on a very flexible floor)

I think you covered everything that has been already explained here by everyone.... and by the way. When you say "NO" and then follow it by a "unless"... that would mean... yes.

Not quite. Some here think that it will slow the ball down. Others think it will speed the ball up.

Which is it?

Balls are still moving so I am not sure.
I know one night at league my team mate was at the table trying to see if he was blocked or if there was room to shoot. I had a few beers in me, and as I walked by the table , I hip checked it. My team mate shot his shot while his opponent wonderd what just happened. I AM SURE THAT WAS/IS A FOUL.

Doesn't matter if it slows it down or speeds it up. I think both could happen depending on the stage of the roll that the ball or balls are in. The point is that vibration does have an effect on a roll of a ball and a player should not tap the table bed with their hand.

I think this happened on one of the Mosconi Cup matches yesterday. The commentator said something about the player hitting the table because he wanted the cue ball to slow down. He did not say it was an effective way to do it, nor did he intimate it was a foul. It seemed to just be the player reacting to a fast cue ball, maybe in frustration.

I haven't been watching the MC, but I'd be surprised if that was really an attempt to change the outcome. If you thought it would work a televised refereed match would be the wrong place to try it.

Apparently I haven't beat this habit yet. After my match tonight my opponent told me that I did it twice and I really need to stop it. I'll keep trying.
