Ok, guys, how about a list of famous people that play pool. I'm not talking bangers, I mean someone that actually plays or at least tries to play the right way. From what I've heard Paul Newman was actually pretty good in his day as was Jackie Gleason. I knew that Tom Cruise learned what he did just for the movie and it was evident just looking at his bridge hand that he didn't know his ass from a hole in the ground. Anyway, these are the ones that I know of:

Paul Newman
Jackie Gleason

I know that David Brenner was either the owner or part owner of a pool hall in New York many years ago. If he is still involved in that venture I have no idea but I do know that he loves pool.

Jerry Orbach was suppose to be very good.

Michale Vartan of the show Alias, according to his imdb bio was an aspiring pro, who practice 12 hours a day, before becoming an actor. (Though is sounds a little like something a PR person made up.

I use to go to The Hollywood Athletic Club, which was a great pool room on Sunset, and I saw Eric LaSalle, Jason Geddrick and Anthony Michael Hall. All seem pretty into pool at the time...

Oh and of course our own Joe Rogan...
 
Oh and Jason Lewis (Sex and the City), use to play at Corner Billiards and Broadway Billiards. I played him once and he would probably be an APA 6.
 
Paul Newman - NOT! Cruise was actually much better, and showed some potential after six months. Sigel knows, and so does Herb Lehmann.

Fred Astaire the old song and dance man could run 70's and 80's. He had a high run over a 100, something like 138. He was buddies with Mosconi.

Jerry Ohrbach was a very good player, better than Sorvino or Brenner. Keifer Sutherland could play a little too. I put Joe Rogan on top of the heap in Hollywood today. Peter Falk has also always been an avid pool player.

Someone on here posted a while back that Newman could play, but I never heard it anywhere else.
 
Is Manny Pacquiao any good? I know he is not an actor but he is somewhat a celebrity and does play in the holywood area when he is training

Manny plays okay, about the same speed as Joe Rogan. Better than most of the athletes who claim to be players like Paul Pierce.

sorta celeberties : older baseball players Dean Chance & Bo Belinski played pretty well, until they played dodger manager Walt Alston . every one said he was a super 14.1 player.

Dorian Harwood (actor) plays well. Seems to be a fan of the game and can be seen in the LA area at weekly tournaments.

Joe Rogan plays better than Manny Pacquiao. Manny tries to zip whitey all over the place.

Walter Alston was a strong 14.1 player, capable of running a 100. I thought about mentioning him, but didn't consider him the "Hollywood" type. Believe it or not Leo Durocher was a good hustler around New York when he was a young man. Good enough to consider pool over baseball for a while. He was making more money. Ultimately he made the right choice!

Dean Chance and Belinsky got taken pretty good when they tried to hustle pool at Tropicana Bowl in the 60's. Bo was a low speed shortstop. Kenny Anderson and Richie Florence beat him out of a telephone number with Chance staking him.

Joe may have a little more game than Manny (it's close), but Manny can play for the cheese. He likes to bet HIGH when he plays! High as in $10,000 sets.

When I saw Joe playing at House of Billiards in Santa Monica he was playing at a pretty speed and that was about 10 years ago, I would imagine he has gotten better in that time. Sold him a nice Southwest and was happy to meet him, he is very cool and laid back.
 
What about Mickey Rooney?? I always heard he was even with Jackie Gleason.

Its only logical that theres some "celebrity" that has been struck by the pool bug and can either hold there own or has good potential.

I always figured Cal Ripken Jr must have played quite a bit for them to make a big deal out of getting the table.
 
Oh, I think I remember reading that Tom Waits plays some and while I lived in NYC I have seen Ron Perlman, Jerry Seinfeld (terrible stroke), Eric Bogosian and Liev Schreiber at various rooms.

I also remember a late night at a bar downtown, the actress Laura Linney was next on the list and I had been holding the table for a while. My friend wanted to leave and she tried to get me stay and play her... I knew she was an actress but did not realize who she was until later... my friend was insistent so I did not stay.

God bless him, but that weak stroke he put on the eight ball using the bridge told me a lot about his game. C player!

Kelly Bundy by far looked the best to me playing pool.

Back in the 80s, they used to say that Robert Blake of "Beretta" fame was a fairly good player.
