Ok, maybe Im just an idiot, but I tried using my new dies last night, and instead of threading, they pretty much just removed all the wood and made the tenon smaller, lol. Ive used dies on metal before, but these are a little bit different. Any ideas, tips, advice, or videos? Thanks.

Coat the tenon with thin super glue, then use wax for lubrication.
Make 3-4 threads, back out, clean, then go back.
Spin the chuck by hand .
Size the tenon at .280". Not .3125.

Cut the ferrule tenon to .280"
Cut the 5/8-11 Joint tenon to .585"
Put a little cue wax on the tenon and turn a couple of threads and back off. Keep doing it until threaded all the way. On the larger tenon you may only go 1/2 to a full thread before needing to back off.

Ca

I always got bad ripped up threads especially on purpleheart until I started putting a few layers of thin CA on the tennon before threading. I hit it with kicker and then a little cue wax and thread it. Bevel the front of the tennon before threading.

I put the pilot rod in the tail stock and put a pin through the threader portion and turn the chuck by hand while holding the pin. Cut a few threads and back off few then continue. The threads come out clean now.

Thanks for all the help fellas. I'm glad I'm not the only one who had trouble, lol.

With Unique threaders, they send you a little round of plain parafin wax.
I have a block of parafin that I use. Probably better wax than that tho.

I don't know what kind of wax they are cast from, but I have found that those little cheap dollar store type white tea candles work pretty well for Me. You can Get a whole pack of them for like a buck, and the wicks pull right out of them, not that It would be an issue if they didn't, but they are attached to a little metal anchor, and simply pulling on that, pulls the wick through and out with minimum effort.

Ah yes - I remember that thread!!

As you can see there was a lot of good information and I had my tenon threads formed MUCH better afterwards.

As always, the guys on here are VERY helpful - I got the first responses within minutes of asking the original question.

Thanks for the help everyone! I practiced with it last night and I finally got some threads cut! Lol! They don't look great, but the steel joints I bought screwed right on them and they were nice and tight. Hopefully ill be making more progress and be hitting balls with my own sneaky soon, lol.

This info REALLY healped me out!

Followed what I read here and Chris' book and dvds and produced really great threads the 1st time trying to do it!

When I first tried using my new Unique tenon threader many moons ago, I got the same result as shown in your last pic. It would chew up the wood the further up the tenon went into the threader. I did the searches and followed posted advice but to no avail. No matter what I tried I couldn't get good usable threads the entire length of the tenon. Then I thought, what if it isn't me? I chucked the tenon threader into my headstock and chucked up my 5/16-18 tap into the tailstock. Slowly (by hand) I ran the tap into the threader and got some small metal shavings. When I was finished I tried out the threader and guess what, I got good usable threads the entire length of the tenon. By the looks of it, this may be your problem as well. Give it a try.

Ive practiced several more times and with the super glue on there, my threads are looking a lot better. I still screw up, but im still a rookie at all this, lol.

All I did was put the aligning rod in the tailstock, turned the tenon to .280, chamfered the end with a file, smeared cue wax on the tenon, put the die up to it and did 2 turns by hand, backed off and cleaned, run it back up till snug and turned 2 more times, backed off and clean.and kept repeating that procedure till done. It worked great, or maybe i just got lucky? i dunno :)
